About the Book

The new edition of this case-based learning tool will enhance your skills in clinical lab test interpretation. It provides fundamentals of interpreting lab test results not only for pharmacy students, but also for practitioners as an aid in assessing patient drug-treatment responses. It is the only text written by and for pharmacists and provides case studies and practical information on patient therapy. New to the fourth edition are: three new chapters including new information on men's health, women's health, and pharmacogenomics and laboratory tests; mini-cases embedded in each chapter that provide therapy-related examples and reinforce important points made in the text; 'Quickview Charts' that give an overview of important clinical information including reference ranges and critical values; and, 'Learning Points' that focus on a clinical application of a major concept present in the chapter.

Review :
Description This book provides information on how to interpret laboratory tests and apply that information in clinical scenarios. Purpose It is intended as a comprehensive reference for pharmacists and pharmacy students on common laboratory tests. In addition to laboratory tests, the book covers other diagnostic tests used in clinical practice. This is an excellent resource for interpreting and evaluating laboratory data. Audience Written for all practicing pharmacists and students, the book does not target any particular practice areas of pharmacy. Features Introductory chapters describe general techniques and concepts in laboratory testing. Each subsequent chapter discusses a different organ system and the pertinent laboratory data used in diagnosing and treating disease states and monitoring drug therapy. Chapters are designed with a summary of pertinent points and include graphs, figures, and tables to summarize information. Mini-cases explore application of the data. The book provides a very thorough discussion of each laboratory test and includes other tests (i.e. functional) that are often used in the management of certain diseases. This fourth edition adds chapters on women's health, men's health, and pharmacogenomic testing and expands other chapters. Assessment There are certainly discussions of laboratory interpretation in other books, but I am unaware of another book specifically focused on pharmacy. This thorough reference is helpful for all practitioners regardless of their specific area of practice. The new chapter on pharmacogenomics in this edition is particularly pertinent.
