About the Book

OSEK/VDX is an open standard for embedded computer control systems developed by the automotive industry. The Spring 2001 release of this standard is the culmination of an industry-wide effort prompted by the widespread use of embedded systems in new automobiles. OSEK/VDX provides an application programming interface designed to increase standardisation and reuse of code in the industry. All of the leading embedded software tool vendors are offering OSEK/VDX tool suites, and all chip manufacturers are providing processors that comply with the standard. In all likelihood, other industries will adopt this standard as the first credible effort to achieve efficiencies in communications and control systems. This book explains how to program for the OSEK/VDX open standard for embedded computer control systems. It is organised to address independently each of the three OSEK/VDX standards - operating system (OS), communication (COM), and network management (NM). Readers can learn about the standard in its entirety or refer to the sections relevant to the components of the standard they are implementing. A fourth section explains programming input and output (I/O), which was not explicitly covered by the standard, (OSEK/VDX addresses I/O by encouraging each company to develop a standard for maximum portability within that organisation.) The book features an example application that demonstrates all aspects of the standard, without focusing on the automotive origins.
