About the Book

This clearly written text provides a comprehensive introduction to the use of GIS in analyzing and addressing public health problems. The book lays a solid foundation in GIS, guides the reader through basic concepts and methods, and emphasizes practical applications. Issues discussed include ways that GIS can be used to map health events, identify disease clusters, investigate environmental health problems, and understand the spread of communicable and vector-borne infectious disease. Also covered are strategies for assessing patterns of health services delivery and assisting community groups in identifying local health issues. Each chapter includes numerous tables, figures, and concrete examples, as well as useful references and Internet resources. Complementing the text is a special website featuring sample GIS databases that users can download for hands-on practice with a variety of spatial analytical techniques.

Table of Contents:

Review :
'While texts exist on GIS and medical geography, there is a strong need for a work that deals explicitly with GIS for public health applications. Now that need has been filled. This book not only outlines basic concepts of GIS use, but also explains in a very lucid manner a range of spatial analytical techniques that can be applied to the goal of improving human health. Carol Hanchette, Research Triangle Institute 'No other book provides such a thorough introduction to GIS technologies, data, and methods of analysis, while focusing explicitly on issues and applications salient to public health practitioners, medical geographers, and epidemiologists. Stephen A. Matthews, Pennsylvania State University 'This book makes the key ideas and materials of GIS accessible to professionals in public health. Gerard Rushton, University of Iowa 'While texts exist on GIS and medical geography, there is a strong need for a work that deals explicitly with GIS for public health applications.
