About the Book

Now in a revised and expanded third edition, this popular work combines the latest scientific knowledge with practical strategies for intervening in a broad range of crisis situations. Leading authorities describe effective procedures for working with crisis-prone clinical populations as well as persons struggling with situational crises and stressful life experiences. The third edition has been restructured and thoroughly updated with the latest empirical data and clinical approaches. Six new chapters address clinical decision making; treating law enforcement personnel; traumatic stress syndromes; and working with chronic pain sufferers, aggressive youths, and victims of terrorism. In-depth case examples in every chapter enhance the book's utility for clinicians and students.

Review :
'Rich with insight and intelligence. The case examples show skilled clinicans at work, illustrating a mature cognitive-behavioral therapy that integrates a scientifically validated approach with the practice wisdom developed in dynamic, system, and family models.' - Health and Social Work (on the first edition) 'This up-to-date, comprehensive review of crisis-based interventions is an invaluable contribution. The leaders in the field combine a critical review of the literature with a practical consideration of clinical issues and cases. Practitioners and researchers alike will find this text a major asset.' - Donald Meichenbaum, PhD 'Dattilio, Freeman, and their authoritative contributing authors have done a beautiful job of updating this comprehensive book. The result is an excellent, thoroughgoing review of the main psychological problems in crisis intervention and related fields. If there is anything important that is missing from this unusual compilation of various modes of crisis intervention, I couldn't find it. A remarkably good anthology!' - Albert Ellis, PhD 'Fank Dattilio and Arthur Freeman have once again compiled a powerful text, applied to a comprehensive range of crisis situations and prepared by some of the finest contributors in the field of cognitive therapy...This text is a necessity for the frontline practitioner and will clearly serve as a resource for continued research in the field.' - From the Foreword by Aaron T. Beck, MD
