Interviewing Children and Adolescents, First Edition: Skills and Strategies for Effective DSM-5® Diagnosis

This text provides a guide to conducting an age-appropriate child or adolescent interview and formulating a clinically useful DSM-IV diagnosis. Part one takes readers step-by-step through the interview process, describing the steps needed to establish rapport, what kind of information should be sought, and how it can be obtained. Excerpts from six actual interviews, including an infant interview with a mother and child, are used to demonstrate techniques and strategies for interviewing pre-schoolers, school-aged children and teens. The components of an effective written report are also reviewed. Part two provides detailed diagnostic information about 28 mental and behavioural disorders that are usually first diagnosed in childhood, as well as 32 "adult" disorders as they may be encountered in children.

About the Author :
James Morrison, MD, was educated at Reed College and obtained his medical and psychiatric training at Washington University in St. Louis. He is currently Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health Sciences University. He is the author of The First Interview, DSM-IV Made Easy, and When Psychological Problems Mask Medical Disorders, and coauthor (with Thomas F. Anders) of Interviewing Children and Adolescents. Thomas F. Anders, MD, received his medical training at Stanford University and his psychiatry and psychoanalytic training at Columbia University. He has chaired the divisions of child psychiatry at Stanford University and Brown University, and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, Davis. Currently Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the U.C. Davis School of Medicine, Dr. Anders has long pursued his research interests in pediatric sleep disorders and infant sleep/n-/wake state development.
