About the Book

This book presents visionary perspectives on the changing roles of teaching, research, and outreach in higher education during our trying times. ""All to One Another"" collects some of the most compelling recent articles and speeches of Andrew A. Sorensen, twenty-seventh president of the University of South Carolina, on the evolving place of institutions of higher learning at the local and global levels as good stewards of existing resources and as entrepreneurial innovators. Informed by the varied experiences of his distinguished career as a university educator and administrator, Sorensen stresses in this concise volume the importance of building partnerships both on and off campus to foster the vitality of the university; of pursuing new avenues in diversity, technology, and research to secure the investments of a dynamic base of constituents; and of effectively managing the interconnected responsibilities needed more than ever by university leaders. The specific subjects and occasions of these pieces vary greatly - as do the duties and audiences of a modern university president - but these statements are unified by a common vision of empowering hope for our future in the yet-unfulfilled potential of teaching, research, and outreach of higher education.

About the Author :
Andrew A. Sorensen was named president of the University of South Carolina in May 2002 after serving as president of the University of Alabama, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Florida, executive director of the AIDS Institute at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has also served as a visiting faculty member at the Harvard University School of Medicine and the University of Cambridge School of Medicine. Author or editor of eight books and more than one hundred articles, Sorensen is a professor of medicine in USC's School of Medicine. He holds a bachelor's degree in ethics and master's and doctoral degrees in medical sociology from Yale University, as well as a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Illinois and a master of public health degree from the University of Michigan. He is president of the Southeastern Conference, past chair of the Southern Universities Research Association Council of Presidents, and chair of the Health Sciences South Carolina board.

Review :
I truly believe that if we find ways to transcend academic disciplines, institutional and political boundaries, and race and class barriers in order to elevate the quality of research and teaching in all public universities and at the same time invest in the knowledge-revolution-driven industries that are capable of transforming the economy of our respective regions, we shall move from good to great universities and in the process accomplish far more than if we work in splendid isolation from one another, or if we persist in pouring new wine into old bottles. - Andrew A. Sorensen
