About the Book

This approachable introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls presents their complete story while bringing the reader up to date on the most recent discoveries that have redefined our understanding of the scrolls. Part archaeology and part mystery, the story has all the elements of a classic adventure novel: the accidental finding, the greedy pursuit of the documents, the jealous concealment of their content, their mishandling, and ultimately the continued study and debate as to what they tell us about early Christianity. Divided into four parts, the book first tells of the discovery and the initial work on the manuscripts. Second, the book journeys back in time to the historical drama of the Jewish struggle against Roman domination that was unfolding at the time the scrolls were written. Then the author looks more closely at the scrolls themselves. He presents a survey of their content while presenting new DNA evidence as to the source and date of the scrolls. Finally, the author looks at the most controversial question surrounding the scrolls: Who wrote them? With new archaeological evidence from the discovery site contradicting earlier theories, the author presents the emerging picture of the community that produced the scrolls.

Review :
"A fascinating new book that draws on the latest research." -London Daily Mail "Wide in scope and ambition, the author scythes the controversies surrounding the sectarian interpretations and conspiracy theories, claims and counter claims and manages to interweave a comprehensive history of the political upheaval of the times that is informative and entertaining." -The Glasgow Herald "This is an ideal introduction to the whole subject of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The author not only analyses their origin, meaning and significance, but also explores more controversial aspects of the Scrolls, such as their links to the origins of Christianity. The author has a lively style and you don't need a degree to appreciate his writing." -The Birmingham Post The Illustrated Tibetan Book of the Dead---0806964316-$14.95-Sterling Publications-05/2000- Atlantis---0749920874-$12.95-Piatkus Books-09/2000- The World of Zen---0806980834-$14.95-Sterling Publications-05/2002- Tibetan Buddhism---0749918675-$6.95-London Bridge Trade-03/2000-
