About the Book

This is the first book to comprehensively examine NGOs as institutional players in the formulation of public policy and the implementation of corporate strategy. The delicate balance between governments and the private sector in managing globalization and influencing broader societal interests is also explored. Globalization has seismically shifted the relative balance of power between governments and corporations. The influence of NGOs—nongovernmental organizations—on business, government, and society has increased dramatically in recent years, yet their role in the process and outcome of the globalization debate calls for further examination. This is the first book to comprehensively examine NGOs as institutional players in the formulation of public policy and the implementation of corporate strategy. The delicate balance between governments and the private sector in managing globalization and influencing broader societal interests is also explored.

Review :
"A rich combination of insightful perspectives on the remarkable phenomenon of the rising impact of non-governmental organizations on business and government. For anyone who has ever been intrigued by images of activists disrupting meetings of powerful multilateral institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and has wondered what it was the activists were after and whether they were achieving anything useful, this book provides valuable explanations. The authors draw on diverse examples to explain what motivates NGOs, how they function, and the impact they're having on critical issues such as the environment, product safety and accountability of principal players shaping globalization."-Sushil Vachani, Associate Professor and Chair Department of Strategy & Policy, Boston University "Both sides of the globalization debate need to understand the potential for NGOs to work with business and government to address some of the most pressing problems of our times. This book is essential reading for policy makers, managers, and scholars committed to ensuring the equitable distribution of the benefits of globalization."-Stefanie Lenway, Associate Dean for MBA Programs General Mills Professor of Strategic Management and Organization Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota "Rather than a starry-eyed volume glorifying NGOs, this is a serious academic work integrating the latest research in the fields of management, international relations, and public policy to explain the threats and opportunities that NGOs pose to corporations. Doh and Teegen's prescient selection of case studies provide overwhelming support for the view that NGOs are permanently transforming business-government relations in the US and abroad in a multitude of ways. Globalization and NGOs is essential reading for policymakers, business professionals, activists, academics, and a public seeking a realistic account of NGO influence in the global economy."-Terrence Guay Assistant Professor of International Relations and Political Science Director of Graduate Studies of the International Relations Program Maxwell School, Syracuse University "The developing scope and tactics of NGOs are a genuinely new phenomenon in business and we need this systematic and extensive analysis of them. It is a timely, thoughtful treatment of a subject about which we know too little."-From the Foreword by Jone L. Pearce Professor of Organization and Strategy, University of California, Irvine President of the Academy of Management "The early 21st century is witnessing a transformation in traditional public policy making approaches to problem solving as non-governmental organizations, business, and governmental officials experiment with a wide range of shared governance processes. Globalization and NGOs represents an important contribution to understanding the structure of these new public/private interactions, and whether they are able to address policy problems in ways that previous approaches have been unable. The book draws an array of key authors, from business management scholars to NGO and business practitioners, and addresses some of the most important policy problems facing our planet, including the use of genetically modified organisms and sustainable forestry management."-Ben Cashore Assistant Professor, Sustainable Forest Policy Chair, Program on Forest Certification Global Institute of Sustainable Forestry Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies "This book demands that we reshape the boundaries between corporations, NGOs and the state in new and imaginative ways. Thoughtful leadership can change the course of corporate community engagement and bring valuable new resources and talent to the arena of social development!"-Sarah Newhall, President and CEO, Pact ?Examines nongovernmental organizations as institutional players in the formation of public policy and the implementation of corporate strategy.?-Business Horizons "Examines nongovernmental organizations as institutional players in the formation of public policy and the implementation of corporate strategy."-Business Horizons
