She is a former principal and founding partner of Mulfinger, Susanka, Mahady & Partners, Inc., the firm chosen by LIFE magazine to design its 1999 Dream House. Crawford is a photographer whose work has appeared in every major national and international architecture magazine as well as in several books on architecture and design.

Review :
Ostensibly American, this is nevertheless an indispensable handbook for anyone designing their own home or carrying out major renovations. The author's concept is to get the most out of a smaller space than actually needed, ending up with a visually more spatial area. Full of inspirational architectural and interior design ideas, the twenty five properties looked at in depth range from detached new homes, renovated farmhouses and cottages to restructured apartments. Fireplaces, balustrades, staircases, ceilings and more are all adapted to maximise space whilst retaining a homely feel. Sarah Susanka, an experienced architect, writes in an easy, informal manner, clearly explaining the merits of each particular design aspect. A must for renovators and an intelligent, valuable asset for architects. - Lucy Watson
