Archaeological Interpretations: (Social Archaeology)

This important book appears at a time when archaeology is fragmenting under the weight of a powerful set of critiques articulated by neomarxist, feminist, interpretive and neoprocessual programs. The author explains why absolute foundations are suspect, but also why accepting this position does not necessarily entail relativism. The book explores the multiple ways in which archaeologists give meaning to the past, highlighting debates over the ontological and epistemological status of the discipline and evaluating current responses to these issues. Throughout this analysis, the author emphasizes the close links between archaeology and other social sciences, but also contends that archaeology, by virtue of the powerful ideological character of the past, opens up a new space for discourse and dialogue. He proposes that, in this way, archaeology can make a useful original contribution to living in a postmodern world. Preucel's analysis also helps advocates of different postprocessual programs to identify areas of agreement and disjuncture between their respective programs.

About the Author :
Robert W. Preucel is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Associate Curator of North American Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught previously at Southern Illinois University and Harvard University and has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge. He is co-editor of Contemporary Archaeology in Theory (with Ian Hodder, Blackwell 1996).
