About the Book

This revised and expanded edition of "Development and Underdevelopment" retains many of the selections that made the first edition so popular for classroom use, while adding new material to make it even more appealing. New material includes: studies that enable readers to trace levels of national development back to the beginning of the 19th century, and in some cases even earlier; income inequality data on more than twice the number of countries included in the first edition; coverage of important theoretical advances; and new work on the role of education in development. The book continues to feature short introductions to each reading, highlighting the significance of the selections.

Review :
"The selection of materials is excellent, and the brief introductions to each selection are deft and informative. Impressively, space has also been found for critiques of the most important positions ... The book also provides a convenient and enjoyable review for those who may have followed the literature as it emerged." - Journal of Developing Areas * "Provides an overview of the debate over the causes and dynamics of the persistent and even widening income gap between rich and poor countries and the rich and poor within the poor countries." - Canadian Journal of Political Science * "This high-quality collection ... deals in a balanced way both with internal and international inequality ... Advanced under-graduates and graduate students in international politics, economics, and diplomacy can fruitfully use them." - Choice
