About the Book

"This is a monumental work."-- Science Books and Films (on the first edition) "The writing is lively but succinct, complete without being morbid. The illustrations and photos complement the text and go a long way in explaining sophisticated techniques... Highly recommended for public libraries."-- Library Journal (on the first edition) This revised and updated history of forensics is expanded to include eight recent high-profile cases. David Owen takes readers to the scenes of 50 infamous crimes and provides detailed accounts of the scientific procedures used to catch criminals. The high-profile cases range from as early as 1775, when Paul Revere used dentures to identify a slain soldier, to as recent as the tragic disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Most cases will be familiar to readers, such as the Lindbergh kidnapping, the Kennedy investigation and Ted Bundy. The book describes the established forensic methods -- dental records, ballistics, toxicology, hair sampling and blood typing -- and covers the latest technologies, including: Computerized fingerprinting and handwriting analysis Mass DNA testing and digital DNA analysis Familial searching and DNA screening Fiber and paint databases Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry Compound and electron microscopes. Hidden Evidence presents the facts and steers clear of speculation. The book is comprehensive in scope, thoroughly researched and expertly compiled -- a timely update of a fascinating book that will attract a wide range of readers.

Review :
[Review for previous edition] A thought-provoking look at the role of forensic science in criminal investigations.--Forecast (08/01/2000) [Review for previous edition] Every page is peppered with photos, mostly in color, coupled with synopses of case histories that are illustrative of the various forensic sciences ... This is a monumental work.-- (02/01/2001) [Review for previous edition] Morbidly compelling ... an engaging, if sometimes creepy, read.-- (09/03/2000) [Review for previous edition] More than 420 photos (many in color) enhance the text, retired L.A. coroner Thomas Noguchi and mystery writer Kathy Reichs vouch for the book in two short introductions.-- (07/17/2000) [Review for previous edition] The book is a treat for the eyes and the mind. Reading the book doesn't feel like you're learning, it feels like you're watching the Discovery Channel. Your students will thank you for this treat.-- (09/01/2008) [Review for previous edition] The writing is lively but succinct, complete without being morbid. The illustrations and photos complement the text and go a long way in explaining sophisticated techniques ... Highly recommended for public libraries.-- (10/01/2000) [Review for previous edition] This work is the perfect nonfiction booktalking book -- attractive layout, intriguing subject, and truly gruesome pictures. This book is not for the faint of heart, but most teens will be fascinated by its combination of scientific fact and voyeurism.-- (02/01/2001) Not for the faint of heart, this book showcases 40 high-profile crimes and the science used to crack them. With the help of lavish (and sometimes grisly) illustrations, Owen discusses everything from matching dental records and DNA to performing autopsies and gas chromatography studies. Once you're finished you'll understand the telltale marks of drowning or bombing, but you won't want to eat for a while.-- (09/01/2000) The volume is suitable as a supplementary text for students and professionals in forensic science and criminology, and for interested general readers.--Reference-Research Book News (02/01/2011) [Review for previous edition] Deaths by drowning, asphyxiation, burning, poison, gunshots, blunt instruments and stabbing are treated in fascinating, if sometimes gruesome, detail.--Robert Armstrong"Minneapolis Star Tribune" (09/03/2000) [Review for previous edition] This is fascinating reading for a range of readers from forensic scientists to professional and amateur sleuths, but the graphics are not for the squeamish.--Vanessa Bush"Booklist" (09/01/2000)
