About the Book

The "Declaration of Interdependence" -- both an enlightening creed and a passionate call to action -- was composed by David Suzuki and a team of activists and environmentalists in 1992, in recognition of the United Nations' Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This convincing statement of environmental principles progresses through three stages. First, "This We Know" places humans firmly within the community of living things that depend on biodiversity for survival--"We humans are but one of thirty million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world." The second section, "This We Believe," acknowledges that we have put the survival of the planet at risk, and then optimistically asserts that we must "now build a new politics of hope." And in the final and moving section, "This We Resolve," we are called on to embrace responsibility and to work "for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity, to interdependence." In this exquisitely designed edition, produced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the David Suzuki Foundation, the Declaration of Interdependence is beautifully interpreted by artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. Using imagery and icons from traditions and cultures around the world, interpreted through his dynamic Haida-Manga

About the Author :
Tara Cullis is an award-winning writer and President and Co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation. She has been a key player in environmental movements in the Amazon, Southeast Asia, and British Columbia. Dr. Cullis has been adopted and named by the Haida, the Gitga'at, the Heiltsuk and the Nam'gis First Nations. Award-winning geneticist and broadcaster David Suzuki is host of CBC TV's The Nature of Things. He has authored over 40 books and is widely recognized as a world leader in sustainable ecology. Suzuki has 22 honorary doctorates from universities in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. For his support of Canada's First Nations people, Suzuki has been honoured with six names and formal adoption by two tribes. Wade Davis is a noted anthropologist, ethnobotanist, author, filmmaker, and photographer whose work has focused on worldwide indigenous cultures, especially in North and South America. Currently Explorer-in-Residence with National Geographic, Davis has been described as "passionate defender of all of life's diversity." Guujaaw is a singer, carver, traditional medicine practitioner and political activist of the Haida Nation of the Pacific Northwest coast. His love for the land and understanding of the vulnerability of life has led him to devote much of his life to fighting the forces that are damaging the planet. Raffi Cavoukian is a conservationist, children's rights activist and world-renowned children's entertainer. He works on issues of sustainability and recorded the theme song for David Suzuki's recent cross-Canada climate-change tour. Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas' art is informed by years of political activism, mostly on behalf of the Haida. His work--including "Haida Manga," the distinctive art form for which he is widely known--riffs on traditional Haida techniques. Yahgulanaas has devoted much of his life to working with other Haida people to prevent their homeland from being logged.
