About the Book

"The Book of Flight" traces the story of the aviation pioneers, inventors and daring pilots who turned a dream into a reality. Based on the collections of the US National Air and Space Museum, this book attempts to bring to life milestones in flight history. This text is illustrated with more than 350 photographs to portray the development of aviation and space flight, and uses diagrams to explain concepts - such as jet propulsion and supersonic flight - and depict the workings of rockets and other devices.

Table of Contents:
Leonardo da Vinci; the development of ballooning; the earliest human gliders; Wright Brothers' first sustained flights; Charles Lindbergh across the Atlantic; Amelia Earhart's courageous flights; Chuck Yeager blasts the sound barrier; the Battle of Britain; Sir Frank Whittle's 1931 jet engine; Harrier jump jet; Apollo 11 astronauts' first steps onto the moon; the International Space Station.

About the Author :
Judith E. Rinard is a freelance writer who worked for more than 20 years as staff writer for National Geographic. She has written extensively - both books and articles - on subjects as diverse as astronauts, whales and dolphins, and ancient cities.

The history of flight is presented with tributes to both the men and the machines in this fantastic picture book. It's the kind of book you can reaad over and over again, just to learn more about how these brave men and women (we can't forget, can we?) gave us this amazing legacy and inspiring technology.-- (01/01/2008) Large colorful photographs and a fast-moving text are sure to make this ... a crowd pleaser. ... Well-written, succinct text.-- (11/01/2001) The Book of Flight could be used for recreation and also in the classroom.... The subject is fascinating and the book well written.-- (04/01/2008) The appealing format, replete with color photos and fascinating snippets of information, will make this book tempting for teens and adults alike.--Caitlin Augusta"VOYA [Voice of Youth Advocates]" (02/01/2002)
