About the Book

Feel the excitement, hear the sounds, watch Rough Tough Wheels in action. Rough Tough Wheels are large, powerful monsters on wheels that perform the jobs too big for most. On a newly cleared expanse of ground a grader, a paver and a dump truck all work together to build a new road. In a crowded arena, noisy with spectators, monster trucks roll and rumble as they race about! In the country, a tree spade plants a full-grown tree straight into the ground! An excavator is strong enough to break down an old house. This third book in the "Mighty Wheels" series presents big, strong vehicles that can build roads, tow or flatten whole cars or haul big loads. They rumble and roar as they carry out tasks that require sheer force of strength and size. Like the first two books in this series, Rough Tough Wheels is written in simple, rhythmic text, easy for toddlers to follow. The pictures are clearly detailed and colorful.

Review :
Rough, Tough Wheels is sure to be a favourite with truck-enamored pre-schoolers. Simple descriptive text is paired with vibrant watercolour illustrations depicting all sorts of large noisy vehicles. Road-building, log hauling, house moving, car-crushing, deep-digging - the trucks in this little book do it all. Each of the two-page spreads covers a single working vehicle. Clear text describes the actions of each machine in 12-15 words. This approach allows the book to be enjoyed both by the youngest of preschoolers as a read-to-me and by emergent readers as a read-alone. Chum McLeod's accompanying illustrations are bright and bold. Background detail is kept to a minimum with the primary focus being on the featured truck. Young truck fanatics will appreciate the level of detail painted into each vehicle. All the necessary levers, pistons and hoists have been included in a simplified form suited to the child audience. Ideas for parent/child sharing are included at the front of the book. Highly recommended for home, classroom and library use, Rough, Tough Wheels is destined to be a well-loved, dog-eared favourite.
