About the Book

We live in a world marked by outrage and entitlement—a culture that thrives on division, discontent, and loneliness. Yet as followers of Christ, we’re invited to something radically different. In this powerful and practical book, Nirup Alphonse explores seven key distinctions between cultural attitudes and biblical virtues rooted in the teachings of Jesus and His command to “shine as lights.” Rather than conforming to the world’s patterns, we’re invited to live an extraordinary life of: ·Joy in a world of offense ·Contentment in a world of greed ·Mercy in a world of indifference ·Freedom in a world of slavery ·Wisdom in a world of foolishness ·Authority in a world of discouragement ·Fellowship in a world of performanceThese countercultural choices are not just moral ideals—they’re the very ways we reflect the light of Christ and live in illuminating contrast to the culture. If you’re hungry for God and long for a faith that’s deeper than cultural Christianity—a faith that transforms your heart and impacts the world—this book will guide you into a life that stands out for the glory of God.

Review :

"We live in a culture where Christians have gotten far too comfortable with their Christianity. This has led to rampant deconstruction, nominal Christianity, and compromise in even the very basic core Christian beliefs. This book reminds followers of Christ who they are, and what it means to emulate the light of Christ. Nirup brings his pastoral heart and a sharp theological mind in Defiant Lights. This is spiritual theology at its best. Theologically substantive and practical for the Christian life."

--Joel Muddamalle, PhD., Director of Theology and Research at Proverbs 31 Ministries and author of The Unseen Battle: Spiritual Warfare, The Three Rebellions, and The Victory of Christ over Dark Powers

"What makes Defiant Lights so compelling is not just its challenge, but its invitation. It calls you to step out of passivity and into purpose. To reject fear, complacency, and cultural conformity--and to embrace a bold, faithful witness in your everyday life. Whether you are leading a church, raising a family, or simply trying to follow Jesus in a complicated world, this message will both confront and compel you."

--Dr. Derwin L. Gray, cofounder and lead pastor, Transformation Church, author of It's Time to Heal: Four God-Given Steps to Restore What Life Shattered

"Nirup Alphonse writes the way he preaches: with passion, humor, and fierce conviction. Born in Singapore, raised in India, and forged in Chicago, he brings a global perspective that cuts through the complacency of Western Christianity. Defiant Lights pulls no punches, calling us to live like we actually belong to Jesus. For a church that has fallen asleep and settled for a powerless and polite religion, it is a challenge to live as people who are set apart and set ablaze with the glory of God. This is the wake up call this generation needs."

--Glenn Packiam, Lead Pastor, Rockharbor Church; author of What's a Christian, Anyway? and The Resilient Pastor

"Defiant Lights is a compelling call to shine in a culture darkened by offense, greed, and discouragement. Nirup, with his seasoned pastoral ministry experience and eastern perspective, offers readers a refreshing approach to rediscovering the teachings of Jesus. His writing radiates his wit, passion, and hope. This book will truly inspire you to shine relentlessly and challenge you to live faithfully to reflect the heart of Jesus."

--Naeem Fazal, pastor of Mosaic and author of Ex-Muslim and Tomorrow Needs You

"Defiant Lights is a timely message for a generation longing for authentic faith and lasting purpose. With biblical depth, pastoral wisdom, and prophetic clarity, Nirup reminds us that spiritual influence is not found in cultural accommodation but in Christ-centered transformation. This book is both a wake-up call and an invitation to become the kind of believers our world desperately needs."

--Daniel Henderson, founder and president, Strategic Renewal

"In a culture marked by outrage, distraction, and performative faith, Defiant Lights offers us a compelling and convicting recalibration. Nirup Alphonse invites us to recover the beauty, courage, and distinctly counter-cultural way of Jesus with prophetic precision, pastoral warmth, and a deep love for Christ and his church. This book will move your soul, stir your imagination, challenge your preconceptions, and awaken a deep hunger to live the way of Jesus in the trenches of everyday life."

--Jay Y. Kim, pastor and author of Listen, Listen, Speak

"Nirup is balm to the soul while lighting a fire at your feet. What a delightful paradox! His work here truly inspires to live deeply with great intention."

--AJ Sherrill, priest, spiritual director, and author of books such as Arrange Your Life: How to Live Out the Pattern of Jesus to Flow in the Power of God

"Rarely do you find a book that feels both prophetic and practical, but Defiant Lights is exactly that. Bold and intelligent, this book will unsettle comfortable Christianity while simultaneously making you fall more in love with Christ. It's the kind of book that disrupts your assumptions in all the right ways while awakening a deeper courage, conviction, and devotion in your everyday life. I found myself underlining page after page."

--Mandy Arioto, president and CEO, MomCo Global

"This is a book for Christians looking to live and share their faith in our messy and beautiful world. Nirup mixes ancient wisdom with some incredible pop culture references and a ton of wit to present a compelling vision for how we can walk with Jesus in such a way that people notice a difference. Our world needs more defiant lights!"

--Andy Cook, executive director, Wheaton College Billy Graham Center

"With contagious conviction, Nirup Alphonse has written a stunning wake-up call for the church to rekindle her blaze in an age growing increasingly dim. Defiant Lights does not cater to comfortable Christianity or self-centered faith but boldly calls believers back to wholehearted devotion and visible witness. Alphonse weaves together storytelling, prophetic conviction, and biblical wisdom in a way that exposes the subtle compromises that have made much of the modern church indistinguishable from the world around it. Every follower of Jesus who longs to participate in God's redemptive work in this generation needs this book on their reading list. I believe this message will stir many to reject passive, cultural Christianity and live once again with holy courage."

--Faith Eury Cho, pastor and author of Experiencing Friendship with God and Unlikely and Anointed
