About the Book

Practice the basics of coding using Blockly. Activities featuring the cast of Frozen and step-by-step instructions guide readers through exercises that teach sequencing, debugging, and more. Readers can try out the skills they learn at a code.org companion site.

About the Author :
Kiki Prottsman is a computer science educator, as well as the author of several books, including Computational Thinking and Coding for Every Student, My First Coding Book, How to Be a Coder, and Disney's Coding with Anna and Elsa. In her spare time, Kiki runs an educational YouTube channel called KIKIvsIT, which helped her win silver in the coveted 2017 Female Innovator of the Year Awards.

Review :
Do you want to build a snowman . . . by coding? Combining the website Code.org with the cast of the popular Disney film Frozen, this guide introduces readers to computer programming, or coding, through the block-based language Blockly. It should be noted that Code.org is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to and participation in computer science by female and underrepresented minority students. The website is free to use, but an account is needed to save projects. An initial 'tour' describes the three main areas of the website: the play space where the code runs (and makes drawings), the toolbox where the blocks are stored, and the workspace where you build your code by dragging and manipulating blocks. The bulk of the book, however, comprises increasingly challenging coding projects with step-by-step directions. The end results feature drawings of snowflakes and snowmen that Frozen's Anna and Elsa's ice skates create. Along the way, students learn about sequencing, loops, debugging, patterns, nested designs, functions, and other coding terms. Concluding sections allow children to let it go and design their own coding creations.--Booklist -- "Website" (2/7/2019 12:00:00 AM)
