About the Book

From a top international crime writer comes an unstoppable thriller about an old-school journalist facing down obsolescence, a desperate teenager, and a heist that will take this unlikely pair to the most treacherous corners of the Internet. There are no women on the Internet. It is one of the cardinal rules of hacking, and not since Lisbeth Salander famously violated it in Stieg Larsson's Millenium series has the maxim been so compellingly broken as in The Last Hack, the new Jack Parlabane thriller from one of the smartest minds in crime fiction, Christopher Brookmyre. Sam Morpeth has had to grow up way too fast. Left to fend for a younger sister with learning difficulties when their mother goes to prison, she is forced to watch her dreams of university evaporate. But Sam learns what it is to be truly powerless when a stranger begins to blackmail her online. Meanwhile, reporter Jack Parlabane seems to have finally gotten his career back on track with a job at a flashy online news start-up, but his success has left him indebted to a volatile source on the wrong side of the law. Now that debt is being called in, and it could cost him everything. Thrown together by a common enemy, Sam and Jack are about to discover they have more in common than they realize--and might be each other's only hope.

About the Author :
Christopher Brookmyre was a journalist before becoming a full-time novelist with the publication of his award-winning debut Quite Ugly One Morning, which established him as one of Britain's leading crime authors. His novels have sold more than two million copies in the UK alone, and Black Widow won both the McIlvanney Prize and the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award. Angus King is a Scottish voice actor with roles in a number of television commercials, corporate videos, and video games. His extensive audiobook narration credits include Last Days of Christmas by Christopher Brookmyre, The Incident by Kenneth MacLeod, and Gallowglass by Gordon Ferris, among many others. Avita Jay, a graduate of Drama Studio London, is an audiobook narrator and a British actress with significant stage experience. She has appeared in several television shows, including L8tr and The East London Story: Slap or Die.

Review :
"A deadly race against the clock. Jack and Sam learn to trust each other, mostly, but numerous plot twists surprise them and the reader. Sam is a fully developed character in a tech world that Jack and the reader now truly appreciate." -- "Library Journal" "A revelation...The computer is the scariest tool since the invention of the buzzsaw." -- "Thomas Perry, New York Times bestselling author" "A thrilling roller coaster of a techie-heist tale..Brookmyre clearly relishes wordplay and one-liners as much as he enjoys crafting a finely-tuned thriller." -- "Boston Globe" "Brookmyre has produced another compelling thriller, and Sam is a delightfully complex and engaging character." -- "Booklist" "Equal parts adrenaline and empathy, a plot that opens out like a Japanese flower dropped in hot water, and characters so real you want to reach through the page and save them." -- "Diana Gabaldon, #1 New York Times bestselling author" "Narrators King and Jay create a host of distinguishing character voices to turn Brookmyre's taut thriller into compulsive and thrilling listening...With a bevy of English, Scottish, and American accents, the narrators prove delightfully agile...An excellent experience for thriller readers uncertain of whether to try audio and a delight for those who already know how wonderful this genre can be on audio." -- "Booklist (starred audio review)" "One of the most ingenious thrillers I've read in a long time...Think a techie version of True Grit. Brookmyre is a pro at slowly injecting ever more anxiety into scenes where the suspense sweat-o-meter is already hovering in the red zone." -- "Washington Post" "Tremendous fun, with superb characterization, gripping moral complexity, and no shortage of clever villainy." -- "Chris Pavone, New York Times bestselling author"
