About the Book

Libraries today, regardless of their type or location, are reliant on technology. Almost every process or procedure in the library is dependent upon skilled use of computers, hardware, and software. Integrated library and discovery systems enable patrons to manage activities such as creating lists and holds, to perform self-checkout, and to search multiple library catalogs and databases simultaneously. This text is written for the library support staff who are the backbone of technology success. Each chapter provides a practical overview of how the technology advances library services. With abundant examples of how to apply the technology in real situations, it is an essential handbook for students entering into the library profession as well as for those who seek to become more confident and competent with these technologies and more: Computer hardware and peripheralsIntegrated Library and Discovery systems Software applicationsOpen SourceCloud ComputingMobile applicationsNetworking InfrastructureOnline MeetingsSocial MediaMobile TechnologiesDigital media equipmentSTEM/STEAM MakerspacesCoding and RoboticsCybersecurityThe Library Support Staff series is aimed for staff that work in libraries and want to enhance their skills, college professors who teach library support staff instruction, and students who seek new learning in the library profession. Review :
Technology skills and knowledge are crucial in most workplaces, but especially in libraries. This addition to the series aimed at library support staff is aligned with the competencies for the Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) Program. Like the other titles in the series, it is practical rather than theoretical and covers a wide range of issues that library staff will encounter.... This text will be useful in LSSC programs; also a solid practical guide for anyone wishing to understand the basics of technologies used in libraries. Using Technology in the Library Workplace: An Introduction for Support Staff is a very thorough and up-to-date overview of all the types of technology support staff may encounter in their daily work. It is useful for workers in all types of libraries – public, academic, and school (K-12), whether for new learning or review. Library support staff students must meet the challenges that have impacted our libraries since COVID-19. Marie Shaw’s textbook, Using Technology in the Library Workplace: An Introduction for Support Staff, has succeeded in doing just that. Her book provides LSS students with a strong foundation on technology trends and developments and how they impact library function and services. Dr. Marie Shaw has excelled for years in keeping up with the current technology needs of library support staff. Students in the community college course I instruct and develop have been relying on her wide variety of coverage on library technology topics for over five years. From the terminology to the discussion prompts, Dr. Shaw has covered her bases in meeting the needs of those pursuing a career in the profession.
