La obra habla sobre varias de las aventuras y desventuras de un muchacho vasco, Mart�n Zalaca�n, nacido en la villa imaginaria de Urb�a o Urbide y criado por un viejo pariente, Tellagorri, un c�nico de la taberna de Arcale. Su hermana, Ignacia o la I�asi, es pretendida de amores por el se�orito Carlos de Ohando, su enemigo y hermano de Catalina de Ohando, a la que Zalaca�n ama. Para evitar que Carlos enga�e a su hermana Ignacia, Mart�n la casa con un amigo suyo, Bautista Urbide, ayudante del panadero del pueblo. El matrimonio se ir� a vivir a Zaro, un pueblecito vascofranc�s, pero luego Bautista acompa�ar� a Mart�n Zalaca�n en muchas de sus correr�as. Sobre Zalaca�n el Aventurero, publicada en 1909, dijo el propio P�o Baroja que fue escrita a modo de entretenimiento, sin ning�n tipo de ambici�n est�tica. Con esta obra, el autor vasco solo pretend�a hacer una incursi�n en el g�nero de la novela de aventuras. Sin duda lo logr�, aunque Zalaca�n el Aventurero no es en absoluto una novela de aventuras al uso, aunque tampoco una novela netamente barojiana. El autor sigue a Mart�n Zalaca�n desde su m�s tierna infancia, cuando su t�o Miguel de Tellagorri se hace cargo de su educaci�n. Una educaci�n que alejar� al ni�o de los bancos de la escuela para adiestrarlo en otras habilidades de car�cter m�s pr�ctico: caza, pesca, contrabandismo. Gracias al modo de vida de Tellagorri, cuyo lema vital es Firmes, Mart�n se convierte en un joven fuerte y valiente y r�pidamente emprende una vida aventurera. Zalaca�n el aventurero es la �ltima novela de la trilog�a Tierras vascas, junto con La casa de Aitzgorri (1900) y El mayorazgo de Labraz (1903), del escritor espa�ol P�o Baroja. La primera edici�n fue impresa en 1908, y hoy ocupa un lugar de honor en la biblioteca de los cl�sicos espa�oles. Esta novela fue incluida en la lista de las 100 mejores novelas en espa�ol del siglo XX del peri�dico espa�ol El Mundo. La novela fue adaptada al cine, ya en vida de Baroja, en 1928. Las peripecias de Mart�n tienen como tel�n de fondo la �ltima guerra carlista. La guerra es siempre un escenario ideal para las aventuras, una conmoci�n de la que nacen mil avatares. Baroja supo aprovechar para documentarse las cr�nicas que su padre, Seraf�n Baroja, escribi� como corresponsal para un diario durante la �ltima guerra carlista. Pespuntean, pues, la novela datos, fechas y personajes reales que descubren al lector contempor�neo las vicisitudes de una guerra civil infame.
