About the Book

Slavery has always been a part of the human experience. Evidence of its presence can be found in almost all cultures and eras. Although it has had differing culturally specific characteristics (for example, it can be assumed that systems like Russian serfdom, where the serfs spoke the same language as their masters, presented a significantly different experience from systems like slave labour in early American plantations, where slaves didn't speak their owner's language or even that of their fellow slaves) it has always consisted of the legal ownership and exploitation of human beings whose status and worth is considered less than that of other social classes. Despite the obvious ethical dilemmas it presents, slavery has managed to persist throughout human history. In fact, appalling as it may seem, we have yet to rid ourselves of its presence. It was only in 2007 that Mauritania, the last country to abolish slavery, passed a law allowing slaveholders to be prosecuted. Not to mention the harsh reality that more "subtle" variations of slavery such as forced labour by inmates or human trafficking still haunt us today and are present worldwide. Besides the obvious economic reasons (There will always be competition amongst economic interests for the cheapest labor possible), there have also always been enduring cultural reasons for its existence. To put it plainly, slavery has seemed justifiable, for varying reasons, to different people throughout history. How such an obviously despicable practice has managed to seem correct, even beneficial to so many and how this ideology has changed and thrived in different historical contexts is what this book attempts to understand. By grouping together the different documents that comprise this book we are, by no means, pretending to defend the institution of slavery. Rather, we expect that by studying the various ways in which we have come to justify it, we may perhaps gain the knowledge necessary to finally end it once and for all.
