About the Book

"each part and poem is about a journey, pain, growth, and simply life... But more than that, it is about facing your fears, facing yourself, and understanding yourself. These poems are extremely relatable, and anyone who has ever felt lost, confused, and desperate can read these poems and feel like they were written about them. These poems are about fighting the odds, fighting for right and your right, and learning new lessons every day. We all lose some parts of ourselves as time passes. Then we forget and in our most vulnerable moments they come back to us, and we are left with a nostalgic ache for the old person and wishing we could be like that again. The poems are quite profound, insightful, and reflective. I liked the titles they were given; each one gave the poems so much life and a deeper meaning. It made me smile before I started reading the poem and, once I started reading the poem, I understood what the title meant. That was very witty. You can actually see the poet's witty charm through these poems. This was really, really good!" - Review by Rabia Tanveer for Readers Favorite. "It's very clear that a lot of emotion was involved when writing this book, especially concerning negative emotions such as fear, self-loathing, loneliness, abandonment, grief, and hatred, to name a mere few, so the details of particular events that might be of interest to readers like me were not necessarily fleshed out to their full potential. By the end of the book, there were so many more details that I wanted to know, yet I'm fully aware that such details are not the important part of the poetry." -Online Book Club Review. "The story of a teenage girl's depression unfolds in a poetic narrative that slowly reveals a web of love, betrayal, abuse, rape, and murder. Sabaine's ambitious debut book combines a novel, a memoir, a social commentary, and a confessional poem as it delves into a teenager's coming-of-age. Divided into 10 sections, the book begins with the "unwritten diary" of a character named Sabaine, a "SPANISH GUAYANESE CARAMEL-COVERED GIRL" whose family immigrated to New York when she was in fifth grade. The girl suffers from isolation and depression as she struggles to deal with a wide range of painful adolescent issues, including struggles with her body image, family expectations, and suicidal thoughts..." -Kirkus Review "No one needs to love poetry to appreciate this wonderful collection of poems. Between The Lines There Lies a Story of Me by Sabaine features well-written, rhythmic, and beautiful poems that will resonate with a wide range of readers, poems that cover a variety of themes. This collection can be read as the poet's appreciation of reality, her way of listening to the throb of life within her, an outpouring of her pain. Through these poems, the author reveals her wounds with startling honesty and the reader can see a path towards healing and hope. What is most astonishing is that the persona captures sentiments that are akin to any human being. At times the writing comes out like a song, a dirge, but sometimes it flows like an enticing symphony, drawing readers into the alluring darkness of the persona's soul. There is a pervading sense of despair that runs through the lines of many poems, and at times the reader feels like listening to the dismal cries of a weaned child, but there is a powerful current of humanity running through the poems as well. Between The Lines There Lies a Story is fraught with symbolism. A perfect example is the use of "darkness" to symbolise suffering, inner aridity, and the conflict raging within the persona. Sabaine combines the masterful use of vivid descriptions with a powerful narrative style to create verses with universal themes of love, abuse, rejection, fear, and hope. The poems are incredibly humane and the writing is utterly appealing." -Reviewed by Christian Sia for Readers' Favorite
