About the Book

The Big Surf Issue is an effort to get at the essence of this absurd act we call surfing. There are certain tangible things like the history, the culture, design progression, performance breakthroughs. There's the Search aspect, the fact that surfers inevitably go out hunting to find bigger, better waves, whether it's three miles down the coast, the next island over, or halfway across the planet. There's the professional side, one that coastal kids worldwide follow and obsess over. But what surfing really is is really hard to say. On the one hand it's something so profound, so in tune with nature, so pure and so perfect. On the other it's child's play, a silly frolic in the sea. But there's one thing that's certain: no conclusions should be drawn from reading this issue. The only way to truly knowsurfing is to get out there and do it. -Jamie Brisick

About the Author :
Big holds a unique position in the world of publishing: the ability to work with many of the best photographers and art directors to produce powerful images surrounding a single idea, or place. Big reaches an affluent creative community worldwide, with our core audience being members of the art, fashion, and design communities. The creative result of each project takes the form of an issue of Big Magazine and since 2012 a Big APP.

Review :
Big magazine has a pretty unique formula. Each issue is made in a different country utilizing a different set of contributors. For this issue, they've come to the shores of the U.S. and hired ex-Surfing magazine Editor In Chief Jamie Brisick and art-direction guru David Carson to do an issue titled simply "Surf." Slightly oversized and printed on paper stock that would make most book publishers green with envy, the surf issue of Big gives its readers a kind of grassrootsy view of surfing through the eyes of such contributors as Drew Kampion, Nick Carroll, Derek Hynd, and C.R. Stecyk. With an eclectic mix-ture of articles that cover territory as diverse as interviews with Malia Jones and Steve Pezman; photos from SeaGaia Ocean Dome's wave pool in Miyazaki, Japan; and collages of photos and paintings; this issue of Big is a must-have for collectors of surf history. Good newsstands should carry it, but if you're having trouble locating a copy, you can get more into at bigmagazine.com -Joel Patterson
