Cuentan las cronicas que el viejo Lear quiso conocer el grado de afecto de sus tres hijas para designar sucesora a quien mas le quisiera. Dos se deshicieron en halagos y la menor le contesto que le queria como padre y nada mas. Le parecio poco al rey, que la castigo. El tiempo vendria a demostrar mas tarde que era la unica digna del trono que, por fin, tras una guerra con las hermanas, consiguio. Shakespeare amplia la trama e infunde a la historia una vision muy personal. Lo que en definitiva presenta es una experiencia extrema de dolor, locura y destruccion expresada crudamente y sin reservas."

Se cree que nacio el 23 de abril de 1564 del calendario juliano en Stratfordon Avon. Respecto al nacimiento del escritor, tan solo se conserva un documento de bautismo de la iglesia de Stratford-upon-Avon (centro de Inglaterra) que atestigua que el 26 de abril de 1564 se registro un Guilielmus Johannes Shakespeare. El 23 de abril, la fecha en la que se suele fijar su nacimiento y que coincide ademas con la de su muerte a los 52 anos en 1616, es una convencion que se ha adoptado, suponiendo que sus padres le bautizaron tres dias despues de nacer. Sin embargo, como nacio bajo el antiguo calendario juliano, lo que era 23 de abril durante su vida, en realidad seria el 3 de mayo segun el calendario gregoriano actual. El 28 de noviembre de 1582, cuando tenia 18 anos de edad, Shakespeare contrajo matrimonio con Anne Hathaway, de 26, originaria de Temple Grafton, localidad proxima a Stratford. Al parecer que habia prisa en concertar la boda, tal vez porque Anne estaba embarazada de tres meses. Tras su matrimonio, apenas hay marcas de William Shakespeare en los registros historicos, hasta que hace su aparicion en la escena teatral londinense. El 26 de mayo de 1583, la hija primogenita de la pareja, Susanna, fue bautizada en Stratford. Un hijo, Hamnet, y otra hija, Judith, nacidos mellizos, fueron asimismo bautizados poco despues, el 2 de febrero de 1585; Hamnet murio a los once anos, y solamente llegaron a la edad adulta sus hijas. A juzgar por el testamento del dramaturgo, que se muestra algo desdenoso con Anne Hathaway, el matrimonio no estaba bien avenido. Fue el tercero de ocho hermanos, el primer hijo varon de John, comerciante, y de Mary Arden, hija a su vez de un terrateniente catolico. John llego a Stratford antes de 1532 como aprendiz y curtidor de cueros. Prospero y comenzo a negociar con productos agricolas y lana; comerciaba con guantes, cuero, madera y trigo. de Mary Arden, hija a su vez de un terrateniente catolico. Uno de los familiares de Shakespeare por parte de madre, William Arden, fue arrestado por conspirar contra la reina Isabel I, siendo encarcelado en la Torre de Londres y ejecutado."
