About the Author :
Gillian Rowe is a full-time writer and researcher working with marginalised groups such as the GRT community. She has edited and authored chapters for this book and has edited and written for the Learning Matters imprint on health promotion and ethics and values for nursing associates. Gillian has extensive experience of the healthcare sector, having been a qualified nurse and then managed a large residential care facility. Gillian completed a PGCE and lectured for Plymouth University; Gillian is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA). Dr. Scott Ellis holds a doctorate in education and has spent the past decade researching at the intersection of public health, sexual health, and masculinities. He is a senior lecturer at the University of Sunderland in London. He works with the Care Quality Commission to inspect healthcare services in England as part of the organisation’s regulatory function. Scott is a Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy) and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. Deborah Gee qualified as a registered nurse in 2006 and has worked in a variety of healthcare settings including Neonatal Intensive Care and Community District Nursing. In 2010 Deborah completed her PGDip SCPHN qualification and has significant experience working with families and young children assessing and identifying their health needs, and that of the wider population in her role as a health visitor. Deborah has an MSc in Education in Professional Practice in addition to holding recognised teacher status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Deborah is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has 10 years’ teaching experience in higher education settings. Michelle Henderson is a qualified adult nurse and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). She completed her first degree at Northumbria University and has also completed an MSc in Healthcare Leadership and is a registered coach having completed an ILM qualification in coaching and mentoring. She has worked in a range of NHS clinical specialties as well as non-NHS settings. She has specialised in public health settings for a number of years, including working as a Sister in Occupational Health at a large foundation trust where she completed a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse degree (SCPHN). Michelle had also worked at Public Health England (now known as UKSHA) as a health protection nurse and Health Education England as workforce lead for Nursing and Midwifery development across the Northeast and Yorkshire. She has also been a practice tutor supporting Trainee Nursing Associates on Open University programmes. She currently works at NHS England as a senior nurse in the Northeast and Cumbria Nursing and Quality team. In her spare time, she is a mentor for the Social Mobility Foundation and is passionate about health inequalities, social mobility and education and development of the nursing workforce. Ami Jackson began her nursing career as a cadet nurse and then completed her pre-registration training at Northumbria University in 2007. She went on to complete a Practice Development degree in 2013. Ami has worked in a variety of areas including stroke rehabilitation, acute older persons’ medicine, intensive care, and orthopaedic surgery. Ami became a ward sister on an orthopaedic trauma unit and developed significant experience in leadership and management. More recently, Ami was a Practice Placement Facilitator, leading on pre-registration nursing programmes within her local NHS Trust. Ami now tutors Student Nursing Associates at Teesside University and has completed a master’s degree in Global Leadership. Jade Carter-Bennett (now known as Jade Webb) has been a qualified social worker since 2015, after receiving her BA Hons Social Work Degree from Plymouth University. During this time, Jade has undertaken post-qualification studies with the University of the West of England and Bournemouth University, and obtained her Experienced Social Worker level of the Professional Capabilities Framework in 2021. Jade specialises in supporting young people transitioning to adulthood. She is also currently studying as a trainee Practice Educator. Jade currently works for a local authority as a Senior Practitioner Social Worker in Adult Social Care’s Preparing for Adulthood Team.
