About the Author :
Andy Field is Professor of Quantitative Methods at the University of Sussex. He has published widely (100+ research papers, 29 book chapters, and 17 books in various editions) in the areas of child anxiety and psychological methods and statistics. His current research interests focus on barriers to learning mathematics and statistics.
He is internationally known as a statistics educator. He has written several widely used statistics textbooks including Discovering Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics (winner of the 2007 British Psychological Society book award), Discovering Statistics Using R, and An Adventure in Statistics (shortlisted for the British Psychological Society book award, 2017; British Book Design and Production Awards, primary, secondary and tertiary education category, 2016; and the Association of Learned & Professional Society Publishers Award for innovation in publishing, 2016), which teaches statistics through a fictional narrative and uses graphic novel elements. He has also written the adventr and discovr packages for the statistics software R that teach statistics and R through interactive tutorials.
His uncontrollable enthusiasm for teaching statistics to psychologists has led to teaching awards from the University of Sussex (2001, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019), the British Psychological Society (2006) and a prestigious UK National Teaching fellowship (2010).
He′s done the usual academic things: had grants, been on editorial boards, done lots of admin/service but he finds it tedious trying to remember this stuff. None of them matter anyway because in the unlikely event that you′ve ever heard of him it′ll be as the ′Stats book guy′. In his spare time, he plays the drums very noisily in a heavy metal band, and walks his cocker spaniel, both of which he finds therapeutic.
Review :
Used a previous version. Great book for both beginners and experienced users in explaining step-by-step how to analyse quantitative data using SPSS. Highly recommend this book.
One of the best books on Statistics, easy to understand regardless of level of study, includes basic and more advances statistics.
I didn′t receive the book
This is a uniquely special textbook with a rare quality where it benefits anyone from absolute beginners to seasoned statisticians. I would recommend this for any university course in which students are introduced to statistics, even if there is no practical component with SPSS in the module. Concepts ranging from the basics to the advanced are covered with thorough yet highly accessible explanations. Compelling and oftentimes hilarious examples and images are used to reinforce core concepts without compromising on academic rigour. I will be recommending this to all of my students.
Summarizing:
- The chapters do not follow the usual sequence from simpler to more complex in Statistics textbooks.
- Most chapters dedicate very little to explain how to use SPSS for each type of problem, from the data entry to the interpretation of results.
- The attempt to use colloquial conversation for explanations is more a distraction than a facilitator of understanding.
-The use of some cartoon-like images through the chapters is distracting; it does not add to the comprehension of concepts.
It is a great textbook, but it is also too expensive and many of the examples are quite childish. I understand the need to appeal to younger students, still....

I think this book also ties in well with ′An Adventure in Statistics′ by the same author, which offers a more thorough discussion of the basics, again with the same engaging style, but without the need for any statistics software.
I teach both R and SPSS, for ease of delivery it would be good if both this book and ′Discovering Statistics using R′ were in sync. I guess I am encouraging Andy Field to continue, to publish a new edition of the R book as well!

This book offers comprehensive, in-depth coverage of statistical techniques and demonstrates how to implement them in IBM SPSS. Its clear explanations, step-by-step examples, and engaging writing style make complex methods more accessible to students who are developing their data analysis skills. When paired with our other assigned text, this volume provides a robust foundation for mastering both fundamental and advanced quantitative techniques at the graduate level.
Lovely text with illustrations to aid those who are using statistics in their research project. I would recommend this as it is a visually friendly text with plenty of examples. Each chapter begins with "what will this chapter tell me" to give a quick summary of what will be covered. There are also self-tests at the end of each chapter to test knowledge."
Best book for biostatistics on a MSc level available. This rework is again a step up, while the level was already so good.
We don′t have a ′mandatory book′ list anymore, otherwise it would be on it. We have it on the reading list with strong references to the chapters within our study manual as well.

After many years doing research and teaching on research methods, even if the examples in the book are not just in the field of health sciences, I have finally found a book that contains both theoretical details of statistics along with how to practically perform tests on SPSS. Something that attracted my attention was the use of colourful images and figures and even the colourful text.
This book really recommended to anyone who is going to work with SPSS and also understand why and how to use it. Thanks to the author!
