About the Author :
Bob Bates was a Senior Executive in the Civil Service for twenty years. During this time, he also worked as a staff trainer and coach and mentor to people with disabilities. He then set up his own Management & Training Consultancy (The Arundel Group), which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year. His work as a management consultant covered a number of local and central government projects as well as working as a trainer with major UK private sector companies. In the late 1990s Bob started a lecturing career, during which time he gained two Masters Degrees in Management and Education and a PhD in Education. He has taught over 1000 teachers and trainers on graduate and post-graduate programmes at two universities. He currently manages and teaches on City & Guild Teaching Award, Certificate and Diploma courses in a Community College The first edition of Learning Theories Simplified was Bob’s third book. His first book, The Little Book of BIG Management Theories, written with Jim McGrath, was on W.H, Smiths’ non-fiction best sellers list for nearly a year, is being translated into fifteen languages, including Japanese and Arabic, and was chosen by the Chartered Management Institute as the CMI’s Practical Management Book of the Year for 2014. His second book, The Little Book of BIG Coaching Theories, published in February 2015, was also a best seller and has been translated into German and Thai. His fourth book, A Quick Guide to Special Needs and Disabilities, was published by SAGE in 2016 and his fifth book, Leadership Theories Simplified, was published by SAGE in 2017. Bob shares his time these days between writing, working voluntarily for a charity that promotes health and education in the Gambia, researching into offender learning and homelessness and teaching Adult Education Teachers. Really great book, very useful for my own studies for Level 5 Teaching diploma. But also great for our T-Level Early Years and Education course! This is an excellent book.
Both for new and existing teachers, the content on the book is easily presented and written in a user friendly manner.
The content within is a huge help to my practice, and I would recommend it to any tutor, here you can dip in and out of the content to find information to help with a question or issue you are facing within the education setting. For PGCE (PCET) students who have not completed an education studies programme prior to their course, this book has been invaluable to them.
The theories are clearly outlined and discussed and help to ′springboard′ their learning to other research and additional sources of information.
Essential book for the last three years and will continue to be so. An excellent resource. Some of the commentary takes a rather personal view, but this is a great contribution to the library for students to engage with. A super approachable application of learning theories in practice. I used the previous edition. This books offers a great overview of a large number of theories/theorists in clear categories in an easy to digest way for level 5 students. I have just received my copy and want to read it carefully. Will definitely be using to reference theories in my lectures to start with - likely to adopt next year but module starts in Sept 2023 this year It is always good to have a range of books giving different viewpoints on educational theory and this one is easy to read and has become a ′go to′ for my students. This book is excellent for beginning to understand a range of theories which you can research further. Teacher trainee′s find it very useful to help them with their studies. There is a reason why this is a best selling book - it has everything! When you need to achieve a solid grounding in learning theory, this is the place to go. So often we (academics) are recommending books which focus too narrowly initially- this book enables you to appreciate the wider picture and then you can discover more from other sources as needed. This book contains essential information relating to Teaching and Learning Theories, which we emphasise in our Year 3 Practice Experience Module. The book is clear, concise and very well presented. I am very impressed and will be relying on this to populate our taught material. excellent book easily read and understood to apply in practice An excellent book for students′ first engagement with learning theory.
