An Indonesian Study of Mixed Methods: An Example of Methodological Triangulation

A mixed methods research study is where the researcher/s combines elements of qualitative and quantitative research approaches by converging different data sources. However, such triangulation of data is not in itself a method in the same way as a quantitative or qualitative approach with a specific paradigm. Triangulation is a plan, structure and investigation strategy deployed to obtain answers to problems identified at an earlier stage, and widely used by researchers due to its capability in cross-checking the validity of findings and its minimal risk of bias. This book focuses on how to combine quantitative with qualitative methods in a real research project. This study evaluates the suitability of land for development in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. It takes into account the risk of disaster and the social implications for settlement in this area. Although, there are a number of publications which discuss general research guidelines and methods, there is a notable lack of books in the social sciences which provide an example of integrating quantitative and qualitative methods in one research project. As such, this book will be useful to students, academicians and practitioners conducting research work.

About the Author :
Ruhizal Roosli is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Housing, Building and Planning at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, having received his PhD in Housing Studies from Northumbria University, UK, and his Advanced Diploma in Peace Operations and Crisis Management from the Institute for International Political Studies, Milan, Italy. He has published extensively in the areas of disaster and development. Muhammad Rusdi obtained his MSc in Remote Sensing and GIS at the Faculty of Agriculture of Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia, in 2005 and his PhD in Geographic Information Systems at the School of Housing, Building and Planning of Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2016. He has served as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Agriculture at Syiah Kuala University, Indonesia, since 2006.Mohd. Sanusi S. Ahamad received a PhD in Geographic Information Systems from the University of Nottingham, UK, in 1998. He is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Civil Engineering of Universiti Sains Malaysia. He is the author and co-author of more than 120 technical and scientific articles, and his research interests are geo-spatial decisions, spatial site selections, and geomeasurement sciences.Andrew Collins is a Professor in Disaster and Development in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the Northumbria University, UK. He gained his PhD in Human Geography from King's College London in 1996. His research focuses on the theoretical, methodological and policy aspects of risk reduction, health ecology, human security and sustainable development in contexts of complex change.
