About the Book

A dark fantasy graphic novel that reimagines “Little Red Riding Hood” as an apocalyptic queer love story about a hunter, an injured wolf-girl, and the dangerous secrets hidden in a haunted forest.

Red has dedicated her life to protecting her witch Grand Mother in a forest ravaged by monsters, illness, and fear. When she discovers Sil, a mysterious injured wolf-girl, Red is drawn into a fragile new connection that challenges everything she has been taught.

From Chinese-Canadian illustrator Cherry Zong, Red and the Wolves is a lush, haunting graphic novel that re-imagines the classic fairy tale as an emotional fantasy about trust, betrayal, and finding hope in a dangerous world.

  • Immersive and beautifully illustrated 368-page graphic novel for teen and adult fantasy readers
  • Dark fairy-tale atmosphere balanced with humor, hope, and heart
  • Slow-burn romance between a loyal hunter and a mysterious wolf-girl
  • Perfect for fans of Nimona, Through the Woods, and K. O’Neill

Step into a shadowed fairy-tale world where love, loyalty, and survival are never as simple as they seem.

Review :
“The perfect comfort read on a stormy night, Red and the Wolves by Cherry Zong is dark, yet never devoid of hope. With gorgeous illustrations and absorbing storytelling, this graphic novel is a clever reimagining that deserves its spot on the fairy tale shelf.”
(Anna Kopp, author of The Marble Queen) “Red and the Wolves has the emotional vulnerability and effortless storytelling of a modern classic in the making.”
(Dave Baker, creator of Forest Hills Bootleg Society, Mary Tyler MooreHawk) Cherry Zong upends Little Red Riding Hood as we know it, setting instantly lovable characters against a mysterious backdrop of secrets and betrayal. With charm, humor, and gorgeously rendered art, Red and the Wolves feels both fresh and timeless— an important story about trusting your heart when things aren't what they seem.
(Emma Oosterhous, co-creator of Grand Slam Romance) Zong puts a sapphic twist on 'Little Red Riding Hood' in her vibrant debut[…] Red’s delight at discovering the myriad ethereal animal guardians and the tenderness of Red and Sil’s slow-burning love story glow through Zong’s rendering. This spirited tale will appeal to fans of Fables and Through the Woods.”
(Publishers Weekly) “Adventurous, immersive, and long enough for a reader to really sink their teeth into, this earthy graphic novel in a shifting, dynamic palette is a strong choice for nearly all collections serving young people at a variety of age points. Energetic but unfussy in art and story, with a great balance of darkness, whimsy, action, and emotion, this is a sure bet for fans of Nimona (2015) or the works of [Lee] Knox Ostertag.”
(Booklist, STARRED Review) “Zong’s graphic novel debut offers a smart spin on a familiar tale about grandmothers, hunters, and wolves that skillfully unravels into an apocalyptic epic[…] The narrative throughline of nature’s mystery colliding with human control recalls Princess Mononoke, while the colorful, playful, and strange supernatural setting Zong cultivates will appeal to fans of K. O’Neill’s mythical meanders.”
