Adelbert von Chamisso wird 1881 als Louis Charles Adelaide de Chamisso de Boncourt auf Schloss Boncourt in der Champagne geboren. Er ist der Sohn eines franzosischen Offiziers aus einer alten lothringischen Adelsfamilie. 1792 flieht die Familie vor der nahenden Revolution uber Luttich und Wurzburg nach Berlin. Chamisso wird Page der Konigin Friederike Luise und besucht das Franzosische Gymnasium in Berlin. 1798 tritt er als Fahnrich in das preussische Heer ein. Er beschaftigt sich mit Philosophie und Literatur und wird Mitglied im Nordsternbund, einem Kreis romantischer Schriftsteller. In den Jahren 1803 bis 1806 gibt er mit Varnhagen den Grunen Almanach heraus. In dieser Zeit entstehen erste literarische Arbeiten. Mit der Zerschlagung der preussischen Armee durch Napoleon 1806 endet sein Soldatendasein, seine Eltern kehren nach Frankreich zuruck, doch er selbst gerat in eine Krise. In den nachsten Jahren lebt er ruhelos teils in Berlin, teils in Frankreich, auf der Suche nach seiner nationalen Identitat und seinem weiteren Lebensplan. Wahrend eines Aufenthalts in der Schweiz entdeckt er sein Interesse an Flora und Fauna der Alpen. 1812 kehrt er nach Berlin zuruck und beginnt an der Universitat ein Botanikstudium. Die aufgewuhlte, frankreichfeindliche Stimmung wahrend der Befreiungskriege veranlasst ihn, Berlin zu verlassen und sich auf das Gut eines Freundes zuruckzuziehen. Dort schreibt er 1813 sein literarisches Hauptwerk, die autobiographische Erzahlung Peter Schlemihl. Danach setzt er in Berlin sein Studium fort. 1815 bietet sich ihm die Gelegenheit, als Naturforscher auf einem russischen Expeditionsschiff an einer Weltumseglung teilzunehmen. Er macht wichtige Entdeckungen und die wissenschaftliche Auswertung der Reise, von der er 1818 zuruckkehrt, beschaftigt ihn sein weiteres Leben. 1819 wird er Kustos am Botanischen Garten und Ehrendoktor der Berliner Universitat; im selben Jahr heiratet er Antonie Piaste. Neben naturwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten wendet er sich in den nachsten Jahren verstarkt wieder der Lyrik zu. Seine Gedichte spiegeln den Wandel von einer romantischen zu einer realistischen Kunstauffassung, mit der er auch ein kritischer Beobachter der gesellschaftlichen Verhaltnisse seiner Zeit wird. Von 1832 bis zu seinem Tode ist er zusammen mit Gustav Schwab Herausgeber des Deutschen Musenalmanachs. Mit diesem kommt es 1837 wegen des Abdrucks eines Heine-Portraits zum Konflikt. Nach einer schweren Erkrankung stirbt Chamisso 1838 in Berlin."
