About the Author :
Uber das Leben des Griechen Epiktet (der Name bedeutet nicht mehr als der Hinzuerworbene") ist relativ wenig Gesichertes bekannt. Er wird um das Jahr 50 n. Chr. in Hierapolis in Phrygien (dem heutigen Pamukkale in der Turkei) in die Sklaverei hineingeboren. Spater kommt er nach Rom, wo er eine Zeit lang im Dienst des reichen und machtigen Epaphroditos steht, der als Vertrauter des Kaisers Nero grossen Einfluss ausubt und selbst ein freigelassener Sklave ist. Als Schuler des damals hoch angesehenen Stoikers Gaius Musonius Rufus erlangt Epiktet umfangreiche Philosophiekenntnisse. Nach dem Tod Neros wird er von seinem Herrn freigelassen. Anschliessend beginnt Epiktet damit, andere in seiner Philosophie zu unterrichten. Dabei lebt er bewusst in Armut. Er bleibt sein Leben lang unverheiratet und hat keine Kinder. Im Jahr 94 n. Chr. mussen alle Philosophen laut einem Dekret des Kaisers Domitian Rom und sogar ganz Italien verlassen. Epiktet lasst sich daraufhin in der Hafenstadt Nikopolis in Epirus im Nordwesten Griechenlands nieder, wo er eine Philosophenschule eroffnet und diese bis zu seinem Tod leitet. Seine Schule erfreut sich bald eines grossen Zulaufs vor allem auch unter den hochgestellten jungen Romern und erlangt grosse Beruhmtheit. Epiktet stirbt wahrscheinlich um das Jahr 135 n. Chr. in Nikopolis."
