About the Author :
Melda N. Yildiz teaches in the School for Interdisciplinary Studies and Education at NYIT. Melda served as a Fulbright Scholar in Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan teaching and conducting research integrating media education in P20 classrooms. Melda co-authored, published, and presented featuring Media and Information Literacy, Instructional Technology, and Global Education. Melda N. Yildiz is global scholar, assessment and curriculum consultant, instructional designer, author, and edupreneur. She is the chair of the Instructional Technology program and associate professor in the School for Interdisciplinary Studies and Education at NYIT. Melda served as a Fulbright Scholar in Turkmenistan (2009) and Azerbaijan (2016) teaching and conducting research integrating new media and technologies in P16 classrooms. Melda worked as a Media Specialist and the director of media services at Northfield Mount Hermon School and taught media literacy and production to grades 9-12. As a teacher educator, she taught Media Literacy Education, Multimedia Production, and Educational Technology to P-16 educators and teacher candidates. She taught as a national faculty at Lesley University, as a contributing faculty to Walden University, as a research fellow at Oxford University, and as a visiting scholar at Abant Izzet Baysal University and Mehmet Akif University. She worked as the director of assessment and accreditation and also as a program reviewer and site visitor for StarTalk: National Security Language Initiative (NSLI). Melda co-authored, published, and presented featuring Media and Information Literacy, Instructional Technology, and Global Education in national and international conferences. She received Ed.D. from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, on Math & Science and Instructional Technology; M.S. from Southern Connecticut State University on Instructional Technology. She majored in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Bogazici University, in Turkey. Steven Funk 's publications can be found in works committed to advancing the education of traditionally underrepresented students, particularly those who are gender expansive and/or trans*+. Collaborating with his partner, Dr. Jaydi Funk, he is currently analyzing data collected in a study addressing gender equity in medical practices and media. Steven S. Funk is a lecturer in Writing and Critical Media Literacy at Montana State University, Billings (MSUB). He also teaches in Veterans Upward Bound, a college bridge program delivered through Montana State University Northern (MSUN) and Federal TRIO programs. In addition, he serves as a faculty advisor on the MSUB campus Safe Zone initiative. Dr. Funk’s research is grounded in Critical Media Literacy, a framework incorporating Media Studies and Critical Pedagogy to further social justice through critical engagement with media. He is currently developing a framework of media analysis called Trans*+ Media Literacy that, in addition to drawing inspiration from Critical Media Literacy, incorporates Feminist and Disabilities Studies to underscore the need for the critical analysis of trans*+ representation in and engagement with media. Named by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) as an “Emerging Scholar” in 2013 for his research in Critical Media Literacy, Dr. Funk has published in Critical Questions in Education and Sexuality and Culture, and other publications committed to advancing the education of traditionally underrepresented students. Moreover, he serves as a faculty moderator for an online support group hosted by the Gender Spectrum, and as a consultant to the Youth and Gender Media Project, two non-profit organizations committed to increasing awareness of and social justice for trans*+ individuals. Collaborating with his partner, Dr. Jaydi Funk, he is currently analyzing data collected in a large-scale mixed-methods study addressing gender equity in medical practices and media. Belinha S. De Abreu , Ph.D., is a Media Literacy Educator and serves as an International Expert to the Forum on Media & Information Literacy for UNESCO’s Communication & Information Section. Her research interests include media and information literacy education, educational technology, global perspectives, critical thinking, privacy & big data, young adults, and teacher training. Dr. De Abreu’s focus is on the impact of learning as a result of media and technology consumed by K–12 students; providing students with viable, real-life opportunities for engaging in various technological environments while in turn encouraging students to be creative and conscious users of technology and media. Dr. De Abreu serves as the Vice President for the National Telemedia Council (NTC). The National Telemedia Council is a national non-profit organization that has been promoting a media-wise, literate, global society since 1953. NTC also produces The Journal of Media Literacy for which Dr. De Abreu is a member of the editorial board and has been a guest editor on several occasions. She is also a board member of the Leadership Council for the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). Dr. De Abreu’s work has been featured in Cable in the Classroom , Civic Media Project , and various other publications. She is the author of Mobile Learning through Digital Media Literacy (Peter Lang, 2017), and the author/co-editor of The International Handbook for Media Literacy Education (Routledge, 2017), and Global Media Literacy in a Digital Age (Peter Lang, 2016), Media Literacy Education in Action: Theoretical and Pedagogical Perspectives (Routledge, 2014), and the author of Media Literacy, Social Networking and the Web 2.0 World for the K–12 Educator (Peter Lang, 2011).
