Sur la lecture n'est ni un texte meconnu ni un introuvable. Sur la lecture, de Marcel Proust, republie plus tard sous le titre de Journees de lecture, est a l'origine une preface destinee a introduire en France un essai de John Ruskin, Sesame et les lys (1905), dont il assure la traduction. L'auteur de La Recherche du temps perdu se saisit de l'etude de Ruskin pour se rememorer une journee d'enfance passee a lire Le Capitaine Fracasse, de Theophile Gautier, et exposer ses propres idees sur la lecture. "Il n'y a peut-etre pas de jours de notre enfance que nous ayons si pleinement vecus que ceux que nous avons cru laisser sans les vivre, ceux que nous avons passes avec un livre prefere," affirme-t-il d'emblee avant de s'opposer sur un plan plus theorique au celebre esthete anglais dont il conteste le role preponderant de communication spirituelle qu'il confere a la lecture: "C'est donner un trop grand role a ce qui n'est qu'une initiation d'en faire une discipline. La lecture est au seuil de la vie spirituelle; elle peut nous y introduire: elle ne la constitue pas." Pour Marcel Proust, "Tant que la lecture est pour nous l'initiatrice dont les clefs magiques nous ouvrent au fond de nous-meme la porte des demeures ou nous n'aurions pas su penetrer, son role dans notre vie est salutaire. Il devient dangereux au contraire quand, au lieu de nous eveiller a la vie personnelle de l'esprit, la lecture tend a se substituer a elle, quand la verite ne nous apparait plus comme un ideal que nous ne pouvons realiser que par le progres intime de notre pensee et par l'effort de notre coeur, mais comme une chose materielle, deposee entre les feuillets des livres comme un miel tout prepare par les autres et que nous n'avons qu'a prendre la peine d'atteindre sur les rayons des bibliotheques et de deguster ensuite passivement dans un parfait repos de corps et d'esprit."
