Il allait se lever quand brutalement, il vit le double de Sofia. Une femme un peu plus agee, mais ayant exactement la meme coiffure, avec la meme longueur de cheveux, habillee pareillement lorsqu'ils se dirent adieu. A ce moment-la, il fut petrifie. Le jeune italien palit a vue d'oeil. Il ne sentit plus ses jambes et sut qu'il allait tomber a la renverse s'il avait ete debout. A cet instant tres precis, il ne savait pas quoi dire ou encore faire. Il n'entendait plus rien, ne sentit plus rien, hormis le fait qu'il ne pouvait quitter le regard de ce morphotype; de ce double parfait. Il n'arriva pas a se lever. Il essaya de regarder le visage de ce double et vit a sa grande stupeur des yeux gonfles, avec des cernes violettes. Il vit egalement la honte et la peur sur ce visage tumefie. Sofia etait une fille de policier travaillant chez les stups. Sa mere etait egalement policiere. Une question se posa a lui: comment une fille de flic pouvait-elle etre aussi puissante pour faire une telle mise en scene ? Cela ne pouvait pas etre l'oeuvre de la coincidence: impossible. Il resta assis a se poser des milliers de questions. Il avait lu quelque part que plus une femme etait amoureuse et plus sa vengeance etait grande si on la quittait. Et quelle vengeance remarquable admira-t-il en son fort interieur. Il ne quitta pas le double des yeux jusqu'a ce qu'il disparaisse de son horizon. Mais celui-ci revient cinq minutes plus tard avec un enfant blond avec elle. Non, je t'interdis de pleurer lui cria-t-elle. Elle longea le petit chemin se trouvant en face de lui. Le double lui jetait de rapides coups d' il et s'en alla avec le garconnet. Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai fait pour meriter ca ? Avec quelle sorciere j'ai eu affaire ? Il etait certainement arriver la meme chose a d'autres personnes; mais a qui ? A qui se confier ou partager cette experience ? Qui me croirait ? Personne ! Si j'en parle autour de moi, c'est clair qu'on me placera chez les dingues pour la vie. Comment peut-elle me faire ca ? Comment peut elle tomber aussi bas dans la mechancete gratuite ? Alors que je ne lui ai rien fait. C'etait peut etre ca le drame: je ne lui avais rien fait. En Effet, Alfredo et Sofia n'avaient eu qu'un amour platonique l'un envers l'autre. Il n'avait rien fait car elle etait fiancee a un autre, et sa morale lui avait interdit de tenter quoique ce soit. Et voila le resultat de sa passivite: l'enfer. Aristote disait la clef du bonheur, c'est l'action . Donc, la clef de l'enfer ne pouvait etre que l'inaction, la passivite et la stagnation. Mais Fredo ne le comprit que trop tard. Apres cet incident, il ne savait pas s'il devait aller au travail ce soir. En fait, il ne savait plus rien. Il n'avait plus aucune certitude et une certaine peur s'installa en lui. Il commenca a douter de sa raison mais il savait que le propre de la folie etait justement que l'on ne se rende pas compte de sa demence. Le simple fait de douter lui prouvait qu'il avait encore toute sa tete."
