About the Book

Four men attempt the impossible: to cross the sun-blasted bright side of Mercury at the point of its greatest fury. James Baron is determined to prove that the legendary Brightside Crossing can be done, but Peter Claney-the only survivor of an earlier attempt-knows what waits out there: heat, glare, exhaustion, bad judgment, and the kind of ambition that can turn courage into suicide.

Alan E. Nourse's Brightside Crossing is classic mid-century science fiction built around danger, endurance, pride, and the unforgiving physics of another world. First published in HereYes

Compact, hard-edged, and memorable, Brightside Crossing is a strong fit for readers of golden age science fiction, planetary adventure, survival stories, space exploration fiction, and classic magazine SF. Nourse brings a physician's eye for human limits and a storyteller's sense of mounting pressure to a tale where the landscape itself becomes the enemy. About the Author :
Alan E. Nourse (1928-1992) was an American science fiction writer, physician, and popular medical author whose fiction often joined speculative adventure with a clear understanding of human biology, stress, risk, and survival. He began publishing science fiction in the early 1950s, placing work in important magazines such as Astounding Science Fiction and Galaxy Science Fiction, and developed a reputation for readable, energetic stories grounded in practical scientific and medical concerns. His background as a doctor gave much of his science fiction a distinctive texture: the dangers in his stories are often not merely technological or cosmic, but physical, psychological, and ethical.Nourse wrote both adult and juvenile science fiction, along with nonfiction books on medicine, health, astronomy, and science for general readers. His notable works include Star Surgeon, The Universe Between, Raiders from the Rings, The Mercy Men, and The Bladerunner, the title of which later became associated with the film Blade, though the film's story came from Philip K. Dick rather than from Nourse's novel. He also wrote medical and popular science material under the pseudonym Doctor X, reflecting the unusual double career that shaped his fiction. In stories such as Brightside Crossing, Nourse shows the strengths that made him a durable figure in classic science fiction: direct pacing, credible danger, scientific curiosity, and a sharp interest in the limits of human endurance. His work remains useful for readers and libraries interested in golden age and postwar science fiction, juvenile and crossover science fiction, medical science fiction, planetary adventure, and the magazine tradition that helped define twentieth-century speculative fiction.
