About the Book

Ayoung girl stands beside her mother's casket. Thus begins the revised Stumpp family novel. Bill Stumpp is an easygoing Wyoming sheep herder/farmer, a fun-loving Jack Mormon. From Georgetown, Idaho Jeanette Tippets is a stern Mormon girl. Her heart's desire is a godly mate and an L.D.S. temple marriage. But passions flame, and he can make her laugh. Bill wins Jeanette's heart, and Stumpps With Deep Roots takes root. The babies start coming. Deep Roots tells of John and Anna (Krebs) Stumpp, German immigrants, who struggle to find their place in America. Jeanette's father, Joseph Tippets, as a young husband, is shot in the chest but lives to father 14 children. Meet the aunts, uncles and cousins. In the 1930s, hard times hit America and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) move into Star Valley. Bill learns what it's like to work for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and agonizes when he must rent out his beloved horses. This is an era where a good team of horses can make or break a farmer. Wyoming temperatures plunge to minus 40, and the snow gets deep. Stock still must be taken care of. Daily life means coal oil lamps are lit, ditch water is packed, a coal bucket is filled, wood is chopped and kindling shaved. No matter how hard you work, drought hits, and you pray for rain. Then there are sick kids, chamber pots, and outhouses. Lots of dirt and maybe a weekly bath in the galvanized wash tub. A world of scrub boards, clotheslines and contagious diseases. And kids-lots of kids.

About the Author :
Kay Loa Stumpp-Shurtliff was born in the high mountains of Star Valley in Southwest Wyoming. Her life has centered in Wyoming and Utah. She is the seventh daughter and the tenth child of Bill and Jeanette (Tippets) Stumpp. She raised her own family of three girls and two boys in South Ogden, Utah. In 2001, the League of Utah Writers awarded her first place in the Members Only Serious Poetry Category. She has published numerous short stories and poems in various magazines. As an accomplished public speaker and author, she is a teller of 'happy tales' and writer of 'good memories.' Stricken with Multiple Sclerosis in 1993, she is handicapped but continues to enjoy life and writes as her health allows. A devout Christian, her books carry the undercurrent message of the miraculous love of Jesus Christ. This is Stumpp-Shurtliff's third book. Her first, True Tales of a Tomboy, tells of her rumbustious youth spent in Smoot, Wyoming. The memoir was run off in a copy shop for a family-only publication. On 2013, she wrote Stumpps: Branching Out, A Real Life Novel that was greeted with overwhelming enthusiasm. Stumpps With Deep Roots experienced a premature birth almost thirty years ago, and there was much more to tell. Footnotes are added for additional comments and family information.
