About the Book

In the broken Roman Empire a sheltered girl Sophia uncovers a secret of her family's past from beyond the grave. The knowledge is as unlikely as it is sensational. It is also deadly dangerous to hold. The most powerful individuals would rather it was suppressed forever. By the early 6th century the western half of the Roman Empire had fallen to waves of barbarian invaders and the Dark Ages had set in. Yet the eastern half endured as a flickering beacon of civilisation with its capital at Constantinople, which had once been called Byzantium. The Emperors swore the fall of the west was something they would reverse one day and restore the Empire to all it had been. But they were besieged by enemies on all sides and blighted with rebellious generals and dissensions among the various Christian factions. Life was cruel for men and harsher still for women. More than half the population were slaves with as much rights as farm animals. War, persecution, disease, injury and childbirth took many to their graves before their natural span. Yet, as Sophia was to find, individuals could endure and survive against all odds by whatever means it required, especially her aunt Theodora.

About the Author :
I grew up in Falkirk, Scotland and graduated in Science at Glasgow University. I moved to England and lived in London and Milton Keynes for a time. Now Melbourne, Australia is home. My day job has been in I.T. for many years but at night I adopt my secret identity as a writer. I love travel, football and pets not necessarily in that order. The interest in the Romans started on my first day at school quite some some ago. Our teacher read a story about the Romans who got as far north as Falkirk, built Antonine's Wall and declared that was the edge of civilisation. It was too cold, damp and riddled with uncouth barbarians further north. It was much later that I found out the Romans didn't entirely disappear in 410 A.D. but lingered on for another thousand years known to posterity as the Byzantines. 'The Bear Keeper's Daughters' is the first volume of a trilogy. The second volume 'The Mistress of the World' is now published as well and I am at work on the third 'The Empire of Madness'.
