About the Book

Where on Sutherland Avenue did the interurban tracks wash out in the Great Flood of 1913? What is the original source of the "Monon" railroad? What happened to sawmaker E. C. Atkins Co.'s prolific patent holder, Robert E. Poindexter? When did the first African-Americans arrive in the district? Sited on land holdings acquired by Indiana pioneer John Sutherland beginning in 1821, "What A Grandview! History of Nordyke & Hollowell's Grandview Addition to the City of Indianapolis (1891-2014)" traces development of one downtown neighborhood, and provides plausible answers to questions such as the above. Offering a fascinating glimpse of late 19th century movers and shakers, the book tracks industrial and commercial retail growth, highlights noteworthy landmarks (including the historic College Bridge at Fall Creek), and describes the role of rail transport in locality development and city lore. Also showcased are the prominence of education and evolution of sectarian faiths. Historical documents and interviews with current/former residents and business owners help tell the story of the people comprising the three major immigrant waves populating the area, (beginning with the English, Scottish and Dutch), as well the neighborhood transitions and ramifications each changeover produced. The book's central theme is the shared desire of most residents for a nice place to live, raise families and have nearby shopping, schools and places of worship. Vignettes, historical illustrations and photographs bring history alive. An encapsulated timeline and extensive bibliography complete the work. A published author and long-term resident, Dolores R. Wisdom is intimately familiar with the neighborhood. A "gentrifying" area located east of the award-winning Fall Creek Place district, old Grandview Addition is in the midst of change - a change welcomed by many.
