About the Book

Are you looking for fresh, anchored-in-faith music? These 72 Psalm-Hymns represent the first two books of Biblical Psalms. They complement the work of contemporary worship leaders and the experience of real life grace. Your private meditation and communal experience will be enhanced by using the Psalm lyrics and suggested melodies in this volume. The Psalms instigate uncensored worship, reflection, prayer and historical education. God's wise law lives in the human soul and is reinforced by the Ten Commandments. This good law reflects Yahweh's lovingkindness in our lives. It informs lament and repentance, and it also infuses goodness into one's choices and activities. Why is it that the Psalms are known for their comfort? Does God's law bring us comfort? Could it be that God's law includes His laws of mercy, kindness and salvation? His laws inform architecture, science and government organization. The Psalms are human mirrors in response to God's laws in the real world, providing us with lament, praise, testimonies, thanks and comforts. These lyrics are real worship, real records, real righteousness: The Psalms encourage the laying down of one's living self onto God's interactive alter, even in His sometimes odd silence. So, we carry these truths about God's trans-formative mysteries into contemporary communities and congregations by singing the Psalms. The Puritans used the Psalms in schools to teach children the importance of righteous ways. The Psalms erupted from human experiences of birth, death, sickness, persecution, betrayal, celebrations, comfort, doubt miracles and triumph. For students, philosophers and gamers, the Psalms present some interesting puzzles to solve: What happens to the flesh, the spirit and the soul after death? What does it mean for believers to testify of the safety and sanctuary of God in the midst of terrorism, disease, betrayal, false witnesses and other afflictions? What is the difference between human law, human legal processes and God's law? Who is the King so often referred to in the Psalms? Why is God called by so many different names? How does salvation through Christ converge with obedience to God's law? What does loving one's neighbors mean when confronted with some Psalm petitions to eradicate one's enemies? My hope is, by reciting or singing these psalms, God makes Himself, His deeds, His records of testimonies and His wise law available to each one of us! I hope that singing the psalms drills cracks into our crusty surfaces so that living water of the powerful presence of God can pour into our spirits. May the Psalms translate into spiritual works, those daily refractions of redeeming love and light into communities. The Psalms are records of human responses to God's divine order and law and His transcendence into human crises. May these Psalm-hymns bring new depth into contemporary worship.

About the Author :
As a young adult during the Jesus music era of the 70s, the author regularly sang all but one of the enclosed hymn tunes in a little Baptist church. College honed the novice songwriter's skills. To the college professors' chagrin, Contemporary Christian Music was all the rage. Yet they persisted in training their students classically, which eventually provided the author with a double degree in Bible and contemporary church music. (B.A.) Then, during transformative adult years serving as a missionary in Africa, Contemporary Christian Music in the United States morphed into a new Western genre, Contemporary Christian Worship, and church bands grew popular as electronic keyboards and digital computers were becoming accessible to the public. This technology brought about a significant transition in the global Church. It settled the author into a surreal no-man's land unable to keep up with digital pop, yet far away from textbook hymns. A paralegal career followed to invent a more pragmatic career; then a wonder filled, adventurous marriage came, serving the community and growing together in the LORD. When local government enacted new codes against the couple's Christian boarding house, it proved to be the crucible in life which formed a deep personal confidence in the safe harbor made of God's kingdom, God's Word and that Christ did not come to abolish His law, but to give power to members of His body to fulfill it faithfully in grace, mercy, wisdom, spirit and truth. The first few Psalm-Hymns were written during the last year of the city lawsuit, and the devotional experience then became as compelling as a deer yearning for water. By the kindness of the LORD, the author continues to thrive in the beautiful foothills of Colorado with the family, playing board games in winter and enjoying the big blue skies in the outdoors in summer, and worshiping. This book is meant to serve individuals and local congregations of believers.
