About the Book

Final Draft blends speculative fiction with suspense to highlight the stresses that changing cultural values can have on people, relationships, and consciences. Taking on the thorny topic of euthanasia, author C. Pender sends you fifteen years into the future, when the medical advancements that are extending people's lives are increasingly causing society to weigh the costs against the benefits. Silas works as a physician in the premort department at Hana Clinic-the debt-ridden medical clinic his wife, Janae, inherited from her father. The premort committee regularly reviews early termination (ET) applications of chronically and terminally ill people who come to the clinic hoping to end their lives legally by receiving a medical draft. Their marriage already stressed, Silas and Janae find themselves further at odds when Janae decides to partner with the governor in a controversial new program that will make Hana Clinic the first in the country to extend the right to ET to any citizen over the age of fifty. Despite his initial refusal, Silas agrees to support his wife. The anxiety surrounding his decision, however, soon begins to erode his peace of mind driving him to extreme behavior. Will the state-sponsored program ultimately save or destroy the couple's clinic? Their marriage? Their lives?

About the Author :
C. Pender graduated from Kent State University with a degree in fine arts. She began her career as a designer in New York City and now works on the business side of a large creative studio. She has a wide breadth of interests and an analytical mind that helps her weave together thought-provoking stories. Final Draft, her debut novel, began with the desire to write a story exploring medical euthanasia in the United States. The original idea was to place the story about fifty years in the future; but as she began researching the topic, Pender quickly realized that this is an issue our society will be dealing with much sooner. Pender is married with one young son, and lives on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio.
