Platon nacio en Atenas en el 427 a. C. De familia noble, es seguro que vio en el ejercicio de la politica su propio ideal de vida, pero, segun dice el mismo, la convivencia con Socrates y la injusta condena a muerte de este le hicieron desistir de sus ambiciones. No obstante, emprendio algunos viajes con propositos politicos. En el ano 399 fue a Megara, y de alli viajo a Creta, Egipto y Cirene, retornando a Atenas hacia el 396. En el 388 emprendio su segundo viaje, esta vez a Tarento y Sicilia, donde hizo amistad con la familia del tirano de Siracusa, Dionisio I el viejo, que acabo por venderle como esclavo. Comprado y puesto en libertad por su amigo Amniceris, regreso a Atenas, donde, con el dinero del rescate que su amigo se nego a aceptar, fundo la Academia, en honor del heroe Academos, y en ella se dedico a la filosofia, a la ciencia y a la educacion de los jovenes el ano 387. La Academia platonica, pues, fue fundada con el precio de un esclavo. Volvio nuevamente a Siracusa, con el fin de poner en practica sus ideas politicas. Dionisio el Joven, que entonces reinaba alli, lo habia llamado. Era el ano 366. Fue nuevamente desterrado, sin poder hacer lo que pretendia. Todavia habria de volver una vez mas, en el 361, hasta que por fin se retiro definitivamente a Atenas, el 360, donde permanecio hasta su muerte en el 347 a.C. ------------------------------Estudiar su alma, tal es el fin que debe proponerse todo hombre que quiera conocerse a si mismo. Pero como se la estudia? Aplicando la reflexion a esta parte excelente del alma, donde reside toda su virtud, como el ojo se ve en esta parte del ojo, donde reside la vista. Este santuario de la ciencia y de la sabiduria es lo que hay de divino en el alma, y alli es preciso penetrar para conocerse en su fondo. Alli esta la ciencia de los verdaderos bienes y de los verdaderos males, no solo de aquel que se estudia, sino tambien de sus semejantes, organizados como el; alli esta el arte de evitar las faltas y ahorrarlas a los demas, es decir, de ser el mismo dichoso y hacer dichosos a los otros, porque, efecto de la satisfaccion moral y del remordimiento, el vicio y la desgracia, la virtud y la felicidad marchan respectivamente juntos. Por consiguiente, la virtud es moral y politicamente la primera necesidad de un pueblo y la causa misma de su prosperidad. He aqui lo que debe tener en cuenta el que quiera conducir y manejar los negocios publicos. Y ensenara al pueblo a ser virtuoso, si no lo es el mismo? Le conviene mas que a nadie tener el espiritu fijo en esta [116] parte de si mismo, reflejo de la sabiduria y de la justicia divinas, donde aprendera, que el esfuerzo supremo de su naturaleza libre, el secreto de su fuerza, consiste en aproximarse, por medio de la virtud que perfecciona, a la esencia del Dios que se refleja en el. Lejos de esta luz, no puede menos de caminar a ciegas y perder a los que sigan sus pasos. Vicioso y servil, solo es capaz de obedecer, como sirve el cuerpo al alma. La virtud, libre como el alma misma, de la que es su perfeccion util y justa, como Dios de donde ella emana, es la unica capaz de crear los verdaderos hombres de Estado y de labrar la felicidad del pueblo.
