About the Book

What if some of the artists we feel as if we know―Meryl Streep, Neil Young, Bill Murray―turned up in the course of our daily lives? This is what happens to Rose McEwan, an ordinary woman who keeps having strange encounters with famous people. In this engrossing, original novel-in-stories, we follow her life from age seventeen, when she takes a summer writing course led by a young John Updike, through her first heartbreak (witnessed by Joni Mitchell) on the island of Crete, through her marriage, divorce, and a canoe trip with Taylor Swift, Leonard Cohen, and Karl Ove Knausgaard. (Yes, read on.) With wit and insight, Marni Jackson takes a world obsessed with celebrity and turns it on its head. In Don't I Know You?, she shows us how fame is just another form of fiction, and how, in the end, the daily dramas of an ordinary woman's life can be as captivating and poignant as any luminary tell-all.

Review :
"Don't I Know You? is sexy and shrewd, a work of glaring imagination conjured with journalistic observation and instinct." -- "Terry McDonell, author of The Accidental Life" "A heroine as appealing and valiant as any I've encountered in recent fiction." -- "Barbara Gowdy, award-winning author of The White Bone " "A writer's life is studded with celebrity appearances in this whimsical collection of linked stories...[Jackson] finds many ingenious ways to play this game." -- "Kirkus Reviews" "Alternately hilarious and heartbreaking...[an] indelible portrait of a woman's extraordinary life." -- "Semi Chellas, writer and coexecutive producer of Mad Men" "Carol Monda narrates this account of a fictional character named Rose as she encounters famous cultural icons from the 1960s to today. Monda shifts her delivery to represent the musicians, writers, actors, and artists who make appearances, including the recognizable patter of some. She uses Canadian pronunciations to provide a sense of place for this Toronto-based story." -- "AudioFile" "Jackson's characters, real and purely fictional, ring true." -- "National Post" "Jackson's prose is quicker than a mongoose, sharper than a scalpel―and full of read-aloud sentences. She takes the familiar and makes it fantastical and then makes it familiar again." -- "Katherine Heiny, author of Single, Carefree, Mellow" "Nothing short of brilliant...[Jackson's] prose here is beautiful: simple, streamlined, quietly honest." -- "Toronto Star" "Reframes our fascination with famous strangers, which can be as flippant as paging through Us Weekly in the checkout line or as passionate as a desperate teenage crush. In Jackson's hands, that fascination is a kind of creativity―even a kind of art." -- "Slate" "Stopped me in my tracks...Jackson's writing is so smooth that it all feels real; anything seems possible...The result is magic." -- "Globe and Mail " "With its backdrop of cultural touchstones that define the passing generations, this playful journey will especially appeal to fiction lovers who are also pop culture fans." -- "Booklist"
