About the Book

In his words, "This book is a dedication to my maternal Panamanian heritage. I was lucky enough to have experienced this side of my heritage mostly through food, and stories told by my mother and grandparents, aunts and cousins. We were able to attend a family reunion in Panama in 2007, my high school graduation year. The book is dedicated to my parents who encouraged me to honor my heritage, both the Bahamian and Panamanian side. My mom would always tell me stories of what it was like moving from one country to another. Though she was too young to have remembered intimate details, she remembers the experience and the feelings well. My aunts, her older sisters were much older when they moved to Miami and would tell me stories of what life in Panama was like. Her stories, along with my personal experiences, have inspired me through the years, and continue to." Sample: Dade Don't Grow Old Man, I tell you Dade, don't grow old. He could still pick mangos from the tree. He can talk old talk Til he puts you to sleep. Man, I tell you Dade, don't grow old. He's still got dreams like a young man do. And won't hesitate to share them with you. Man, I tell you Dade, don't grow old. And all his children love his ways Still today, I hear them say: "Man I tell you Dade don't grow old."
