About the Book

"DEAR SON, STAY SAFE" concentrates in detail on the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915 (briefly explored in "Franklin & A Trench Raid (- part 1 of the trilogy "Darling be Home soon"). In 1914, Ridley Judde is on the run after a vicious gangland fight in Bradford, Yorkshire. He joins up in the frenzy of jingoistic recruiting at the start of World War One & finds himself in the same platoon as his cousin Lt. Frank Franklin. Ridley's arch-enemy, Billy-Boy Lumsden is also in the platoon & they soon lock horns. The 8th (Service) Battalion of the West Riding (Duke of Wellington's) Regiment are destined for Gallipoli to fight the Ottoman Turks who are initially seen as poor troops propped up by German instructors. The Campaign is seen as a disaster of poor planning, hopeless logistics, confusing orders & a lack of energetic determination by the Generals. Poor food, hygiene & lack of drinking water hinders the campaign throughout & medical services are swamped by dysentery, infection & safe room & shelter in which to work. Ridley Judde's mother Cora, writes to her son, regularly signing off her letters with a heartfelt "Dear Son, Stay Safe" but Ridley rarely replies & Cora worries as her son has always been unruly & belligerent. We witness the heavy losses at Cape Helles, when 29th Division attacks at "V" Beach & Corporal Dan Regan & men of the Munster & Dublin Fusiliers attack from inside a converted collier "S.S. River Clyde." In April, Paul Hannigan & New Zealanders of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles land on crowded ANZAC Cove. They later take part in a cease fire to bury the dead of both sides. A Scots soldier Stewart Coulter is wounded & found by a young Turkish villager & his capture at the hands of German Hauptmann Schwarzbaum is thwarted by quick thinking on the part of the villagers. Schwarzbaum's local woman Misha is abandoned & mistreated by his men & wanders off rejected. In August, Franklin & Judde take part in landings at Suvla Bay where again, lost opportunities become the signature of Allied Generals inaction. At home, Franklin's sister Eleanor is robbed in Bradford whilst visiting Cora Judde. Ned North, Cora's admirer, sorts out the thieves using gangland contacts. Later, in August, the last big joint Allied offensive takes place resulting in huge losses in the Helles, ANZAC & Suvla theatres. The campaign settles down into one of sporadic trench raids & sniping whilst flies, disease, poor food & oppressive heat continues to take its toll. Ridley is hurt & found helpless by Misha who shoots a Turkish deserter & gets gets Ridley back to safety & becomes an auxiliary hospital orderly whilst forming an attachment with him. Two soldiers are bitten by deadly spiders but suffer different symptoms. Ridley is hurt again & this time is invalided home where he finds Ned North has taken up with his mother Cora. Ned turns out to be on official government service with MI5 & pursues villains intent on blackmail & harm to British interests. From the earlier title "Franklin & A Trench Raid," we meet old friends & see Lt Franklin prior to being torpedoed on the hospital ship "Zakynthos Dawn." Stretcher-bearer Arthur Goodkind continues to pop up dispensing strange cures when he isn't getting a bear drunk or effecting a rescue of P.O.W.s using goats & native Kangal dogs! Doctor Mort Mandrake continues his romance with self-doubting nurse Ruth Starling who is helped through difficulties by redoubtable Matron Mary McHale. Mandrake & Starling get embroiled in a Turkish officer's escape & find danger. The book ends where various surviving characters find themselves in France prior to the great Somme battles. A rattling pace of a book set amongst the real background of an historical debacle fought with savagery & occasional chivalry, resulting in an humiliating retreat by British, Dominion & French forces. This book can be read as a stand-alone story but as many characters are shared, it can be read with either of the two trilogi
