Emphasizing applications, problem solving, design of structural members, mechanical devices and systems, the book has been updated to include coverage of the latest tools, trends, and techniques. Color graphics support visual learning, and illustrate concepts and applications. Numerous instructor resources are offered, including a Solutions Manual, PowerPoint slides, Figure Slides of book figures, and extra problems. With SI units used exclusively, this text is ideal for all Technology programs outside the USA.

Table of Contents:
Basic Concepts in Strength of Materials. Design Properties of Materials. Direct Stress, Deformation, and Design. Torsional Shear Stress and Torsional Deformation. Shearing Forces and Bending Moments in Beams. Centroids and Moments of Inertia of Areas. Stress Due to Bending. Shearing Stresses in Beams. Deflection of Beams. Combined Stresses. Columns. Pressure Vessels. Connections. Appendix. Answers to Selected Problems. Index.

About the Author :
Robert L. Mott, P.E. is professor emeritus of engineering technology at the University of Dayton. He is a member of ASEE, SME, and ASME. He is a Fellow of ASEE and a recipient of the ASEE James H. McGraw Award, Frederick J. Berger Award, and the Archie Higdon Distinguished Educator Award (From Applied Mechanics Division). He is a recipient of the SME Education Award. He holds the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University), and the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. His industry experience includes General Motors Corporation, consulting for several companies, and serving as an expert witness on numerous legal cases. He is the author of three textbooks: Applied Fluid Mechanics 7th ed. (co-authored with Joseph A. Untener) and Machine Elements in Mechanical Design 5th ed., published by Pearson/Prentice-Hall; Applied Strength of Materials 6th ed. (co-authored with Joseph A. Untener) with CRC Press. Joseph A. Untener, P.E. is a professor of engineering technology at the University of Dayton. He is a member of ASEE, SME, and ASME. He holds the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University), and the Master of Science in Industrial Administration from Purdue University. He has worked on the design and implementation of manufacturing equipment at General Motors, and served as an engineering consultant for many other companies. He teaches courses in Mechanical Engineering Technology at University of Dayton. He has co-authored two textbooks with Robert L. Mott: Applied Fluid Mechanics 7th ed. published by Pearson/Prentice-Hall, and Applied Strength of Materials 6th ed. with CRC Press.

Review :
"This book provides comprehensive coverage of the key topics in strength of materials–with an emphasis on applications, problem solving, and design of structural members, mechanical devices and systems. It includes coverage of the latest tools, trends and analysis techniques, and makes great use of example problems. This book provides good readability for the student, appropriate coverage of the principles of strength of materials and a problem-solving and design approach that is useful for the students, designer or engineer." — Shaikh Ibrahim Ismail, University of Mumbai, India "The main attraction of the book being reviewed is the "Big Picture" aspect at the start of each chapter. This gives students a connection to what they already know with experience or what they see around in their daily life (of course with their engineering eyes!) and the topic being taught. The other important of part or style of this book is, it is written with loads of explanations which make somebody new to these topics feel comfortable. Unlike some which scare student with lots of vectors and calculus are the very early lessons. Lastly, having this author’s book fully written in SI unit is a great help of students around the globe, as many time students feel set back when they see US units in this part of the world." — Ravindra Savangouder, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia "The chapters give real examples from life which provide better understanding for students. Examples given are also practical examples from life. In addition to these, SI unit system is easy to use and universal." — Elif Cagda Kandemir Mazanoglu, Usak University, Turkey
