About the Book

Preface to the Latest American Edition. THE present edition of Warren's Law Studies, has been prepared with especial reference to the use of American Law-students. It has been carefully compiled from the latest London edition, in which the distinguished author has given to our profession a work which, for its clearness of style, depth of thought, and purity of purpose, will cause it to remain an enduring monument to his fame. Of him it may be truly said, that he has paid the debt which Lord Bacon holds every man to owe to his profession. The editor has found it a most ungrateful task to abridge - he has been reminded, at every step, of the language used by Sir William Blackstone, where he says, in speaking of a like duty, "it is impossible to abstract or abridge it, without losing some beauty and destroying the chain of the whole," Nothing but the necessity of bringing the work within the compass of a single volume, would justify abridgement. Finally it is hoped that this edition, the fruit of much care and pains, (more in rejecting, than in adopting, ) may meet the approbation of the class for whom the author designed it. The index has been carefully revised, so that it may correspond to the present edition. The language of the author is most cordially endorsed, where he recommends this prayer as "worthy of being engraved on the memory and heart of every student of the law" "Almighty God, the giver of wisdom, without whose help resolutions are vain - without whose blessing study is ineffectual, enable me if it be Thy will, to attain such knowledge as may qualify me to direct the doubtful, and instruct the ignorant; to prevent wrongs, and terminate contentions; and grant that I may use that knowledge which I shall attain, to Thy glory, and my own salvation, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen."
