About the Book

This innovative study makes a testable claim about underlying structural principles governing interlanguage grammars and tests certain aspects of interlanguage against universal properties of language contact performance data. It makes predictions about the natural developmental sequence of second language acquisition in general and developmental directions of interlanguage in particular.

About the Author :
Dr. Longxing Wei is Professor Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics at Montclair State University. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from University of South Carolina. In addition to Current Theories of Second Language Acquisition, he specializes in Syntax, Semantics, pragmatics, Advanced Structure of American English, Cognitive Linguistics, Contact Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Research design in Applied Linguistics. This study is an innovative analysis of interlanguage: second language learners' developing linguistic system of the target language. It assumes that the general principles governing language contact performance data also apply in explaining the organizing and structural principles governing interlanguage grammars. The general principles governing language contact performance, such as intrasentential codeswitching, are thus taken into consideration in accounting for those that constrain actual second and third language speech production, for learners' 'incomplete' grammars and for what is called language 'interference' or 'transfer'. From some psycholinguistic perspectives, it relates second and third language learners' interlanguage production phenomena to the nature and activity of the bilingual and multilingual mental lexicon.

Review :
From the Foreword: "This book differs in distinctive and - more importantly- convincing ways form much of the current literature in SLA studies...Wei's extensive examples of inter-language from different language pairs, will give other researchers much to think about... his innovative analysis of interlanguage (IL), a study of the theoretical basis of the acquisition of both second and third languages. . .provides new perspective in how researchers and students of SLA might approach explanations of the basis of second and third language learning." -Dr: CorolMyerS-Scottoo, Professor Emerita, University South Carolina. From a Peer Review: "This book on Interlanguage (IL) is a welcome addition to both the fields of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and the study of language in contact and multilingualism more generally. It offers a fresh perspective which is both theoretically sophisticated and empirically supported. In addition to providing a framework for analyzing IL structure, it also provides readers with an introduction to a theory of language processing and production which has much broader applications." - Dr. Janet Fuller; Professor of Anthropology Southern Illinois University.
