About the Book

Morbid Hearts, the first book in the Dead Hearts Novel Series, is the story of the Fighting Tigers, one of a dozen teenage scout patrols fighting against zombies on Pike's Peak, near Colorado Springs. It's a year after the Zombie Scourge. Everyone aged 12 to 17 are forced to join a scout patrol, run by the local militia, the Freedom Army (ages 18 and over). Life seems simple enough for the scout patrols. All the patrols have to do is ride around on ATVs, carrying assault rifles, and monitor an ten mile electric fence, in sections, that surrounds the Garden of the Gods, the towns of Manitou Springs and Cascade, and circles around Pike's Peak where the main base is located. Cadence, the Tigers' leader, has a little more to deal with than the average seventeen year old. Keeping the Tigers in check. Keeping them off each other's nerves. Keeping them alive. But when her second-in-command, Highbrow, goes missing, and scavengers cut down a section of the fence without electricity, every zombie in Colorado seems to want to come to the Peak and 'feed'. Her boyfriend, Rafe, a soldier in the F.A. (fraternizing between patrols and soldiers is not allowed and the punishment for such relationships is grim), just might have been bitten when his unit is overrun by zombies; he's certainly acting weird. And Cadence is worried about both Highbrow and Rafe, but she has even bigger concerns. With the Freedom Army penned down by scavengers and zombies storming the Peak, Cadence leads the scout patrols into a full-scale battle against the horde. The scout patrols all have their own names, logo, and nicknames to suit their personalities. Which team would you join? The Fighting Tigers, the Vikings, China Six, the Bull Dogs, the Blue Devils, the Green Hornets, the Panthers, the Head Hunters, the Avengers, the Razorbacks, the War Gods or the Amazons? Every team carries their own trademark weapons, as well as wear berets with team patches, and they all want to make a name for themselves: TO BE THE BEST TEAM ON THE PEAK! But here's the catch: The zombie virus mutates. The H1N1 virus has gone amok. Was it made in a lab? Is it just Mother Nature culling the herd? Or is someone trying to destroy the world on purpose? For nearly a year the virus has created only zombies, but on a special day, a bit of zombie goo is ingested by 4 individuals - and they turn into Vampire Makers. If they bite a human and share their blood, they make another vampire, but if they drain the human dry, it comes back as a zombie. Only a Vampire Maker can make other vampires, but an ordinary vampire only makes zombies. Uh oh. But if a Vampire Maker wants to dine on a wolf or a puma and don't kill the animal afterwards, it becomes a carrier of the virus, and anyone bitten by an infected animal becomes a shape shifter...able to turn into whatever animal passed on the virus. Maybe being a werewolf or a werepuma isn't so bad, after all. If Cadence and the Fighting Tigers can survive thousands of zombies and scavengers (because there's nothing like an apocalypse to bring out the worst or best in people), surely they can handle a growing vampire menace and a tribe of werewolves (no pack mentality here)...if they can only stick together! And that's the tricky part, and where all the fun begins. Author's Note: I have a 'based in part' credit for writing ST: TNG Episode 76 "Family..".and have been writing novels since the age of 8, and I love sci-fi and horror. I wrote this series because zombie and vampire fanatics all agree a zombie can't turn a vampire into a zombie, and a vampire can't turn a zombie into a vampire; but I say a virus can do anything it wants. This series is also about friendship, trust, deception, betrayal, and growing up in a world that's turned upside down. SO JOIN THE HORDE! READ THE SERIES!
