About the Book

For all the deserved praise that has been heaped on the music of Beatles, their visual output--from their TV, video, and film work to their album covers, magazine photo spreads, and personal drawings and artworks--has never been fully appreciated as a whole. Nonetheless, as this beautifully illustrated book shows, the band's four members, individually and collectively, were arguably just as experimental and influential in visual media as in the recording studio, inspiring generations of movies and TV shows, stage productions, and other works of art. The group's film and television legacy alone is little short of astounding. After their energetic but standard appearances on such early 1960s live TV programs as Ready Steady Go! (the British equivalent of American Bandstand), everything the Beatles did was different. Making their live U.S. debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, they drew more viewers than had ever watched an entertainment TV program, and launched an artistic British invasion that changed history. But they also were pioneers, decades before MTV, of the prototypical music video, in which they performed following their defiant refusal, in 1966, to do any more live concerts. They also participated in the world's first globally televised live TV special, 1967's Our World, emanating via satellite from various points on the globe. And they produced or inspired a great number of original movies and shows, including the flop TV special Magical Mystery Tour, films like Help! and Let It Be, and animated fare such as Yellow Submarine and the Saturday morning program The Beatles. See The Beatles looks at all this and more: early filmed appearances in front of British royalty; cheeky press conferences televised by mainstream TV news outlets; nude underground films by and starring John Lennon and Yoko Ono; and starring roles or musical soundtracks for other films, such as Ringo Starr's appearances in movies like Candy and The Magic Christian and George Harrison's all-Moog-synthesizer soundtrack for Wonderwall. Other chapters and sections of the book examine many other iconic examples of Beatle-related imagery, including their groundbreaking album covers, savvy management of their photographic image, and even hand-drawn sketches. Taken together, they provide an unprecedented fresh look at a band that taught us not only how to hear, but to see.
