About the Book

1918 and Sarah Ann is returning home in disgrace. Returning to the mining valley and her family home - a mountain farm. Not only are her surroundings full of doom and gloom but so is her heart. Rather than bring her unborn child up as a 'bastard' she has decided to say that she is a widow. Her heart is broken; she will never love again as she loved her beloved John - what has the terrible war done to him that he has lost all memory of her. A daughter is born; her pride and joy but life is hard; not just for her, her mother brothers and grand-parents but for the mining community. She marries and a son is born only to die at a young age - she feels it is punishment for not loving her husband as still in her heart is the memory of her first love. She goes to London for her daughter's engagement party and is devastated to find that the man her daughter plans to marry is the son of her lost love. When she comes face to face with John he has no remembrance of her; his very presence is disturbing she wants to reach out and touch him, to hold him in her arms. He asks had they met before; how she longs to tell him. As they sit and talk he reveals that when he married his wife she was a widow with a young son; to learn this was a blessing to Sarah as all she wants is her daughter's happiness. On her return home life was never to be the same as she could not get John out of her mind. An accident in the mine leaves her husband disabled and also causes a change in his character and he abuses Sarah who prays for an end to all the trials and tribulations of her life. After the premature death of her husband she leaves behind the valley and all the heart breaking memories and becomes a companion to a lady. With the escalation of the second world war they move to Pembrokeshire and once more Sarah uses her farming skills to help run the estate. Betty her friend now in her early forties falls in love with the estate manager and cannot believe it when she becomes pregnant; they tell Sarah they plan to marry after the baby is born. Sarah visits her daughter Merryl in London after being told that John is in hospital after a bombing that killed his wife. He still has no remembrances of the first world war. A bomb hits the room where they are sitting and they are hit by a falling timber. She awakes up in hospital and finds john and her daughter standing by her bed; what joy she feels when John recognizes her as his lost love; a knock on the head had brought back his memory. Recovery at her daughter's home is slow; she so longs to get away from London and the nightly bombing raids. John surprises her with an early Christmas present; he has bought a house for them but wont tell her where. John takes them on a roundabout route to mislay them but what joy Sarah fields when she finds that he has bought the manor house next to the cottage where Betty and she ivied. Not just the manor house but the three dwellings and farm land had been bought between John and James Betty's intended. The house for James and Betty and the cottage for Merryl and Richard. There is only one thing missing in Sarah's life and that is a wedding band on her finger. She secretly arranges their wedding in the village church and asks James to use a pretence to get John there. The final chapter shows Sarah and her family celebrating the end of the war with a garden party. How happy she is in her arms is her baby son at her feet playing are Merryl's and Betty's two toddlers whilst Merryl and Betty are busy preparing the party food. Her two brothers, that she hadn't seen for many a year, and their wives and children have at last returned home. Behind her with his hand on her shoulder is the love of her life at last their love is complete. She always believed that one day they would meet again. We will leave her sitting there with her family and friends around her whilst she listens to Miss Lynn singing 'We'll Meet Again'.
